Im 7 weeks post reco and i was just wondering when most people returned to playing football soccer or rugby. My phsiyo is hell bent that i give it 12 months or longer but one of my mates returned in 9 months and played footy, so yeah i just wanted to know if other people have returned from a reco in under 12 months.

Data is limited but basically it is considered madness to return in under 5 months and conservative to wait 12 months, with your pick in between (assuming the knee is 'ready' according to expert examination)

Well a return to sport early wasnt something i was willing to gamble on. I waited just over 13 months in returning to soccer (and i did so by playing mixed indoor soccer, nice easy way in, plus it was midseason so i i wasnt a chance at playing outdoor) but also depends on the person though, coz basically if i am to do my knee again then thats retirement for me. just make sure ur absolutely right to go and dont give in to temptation, i know everyone misses playing but just a little bit extra could make a difference. It is tuff waiting and waiting, but i can imagine it'll be a lot tuffer to go through the process all over again.

My theory is, do it once, do it right
dont take shortcuts and dont compare urself to other people that have had one and returned in X months.

I am waiting to return to netball from my reco.... but I'll be waiting till it feels right before I play again..... I dont want to risk doing it again! Im told that the graft is not at 100% strength before 12 months is up so Im not willing to risk it at this stage. Im about 4-5 months post op... so I know what you are going through.... it is a lot of hard work getting back, so my thoguths are I'd like to make sure of it.

Thanks for that fellas, one more question ive got this clicking sound in my knee when ever i walk, i just hear a click every so often, it was like that before i had the op and i thought it would just go away after the surgery, is that normal? or is it anything to worry about?

Mine doesnt click..... but then again it didnt before the surgery either.... so Im not much help. Check with your OS I think is your best option.

Was wondering what people's thoughts were on trying a triathalon about 6 months from surgery. Am at about 4.5 months now, and seem to be recoving very well from the ACL/MCL reconstruction. I followed the surgeon's protocol from day dot, and apart from the time with the brace havent had any problems. At the moment I can jog comfortably for 20mins on a treadmill, cycle for 2 hours or swim for a hour (not together mind you!)

My gut is telling me that I can do it, but my head thinks the opposite. Not sure if it's lack of confidence or prudence in my head!

Just wondering what other people think.

If anyone would like a reference for my surgeon please ask. I saw two in the lead up, and the 1st one should have been shot for the advice I received!

I am having my op Feb 3rd. However I have set my goal for recovery to do a Gatorade or Protiviti Triathlon in April next year 2007. Honestly, I don't want to have to go through this again so the more time you devote to rehab can only strengthen the new ligament(s) and help avoid a re-occurance.

Good luck with the op.

For the last 2 months I havent had any problems at all with the knee. Mind you I dont wish to go through any of this again. (Hate those Victorian Ski fields!)

Problem I'm having with the rehab now is that it feels good, I can use it and I'm getting very bored with the rehab, and really need a goal to keep it going for the next two months!

mate i got recommened 9months (i suppose it depends on how bad the rupture is though)mine was a complete rupture, some of my rugby mates have come back playing between 6-9months later (but then again some of these guys have had like 2 or 3 knee ops after their acl)so yeah.im gonna push mine to be back asap but when i actually come back all depends on how strong my knee is and stable and how flexible it is.wether it be 9 months or 12 months but i wouldnt get back into high level rugby or any level rugby until i was sure my knee was sweet, especially in terms of my own confidence as well as trying to limit the injury from happening again.

its so hard to know whether to wait or have a go earlier. it is now 4 months since me recon (same as you, complete rupture of the acl, partial to my medial and lateral, tears in both meniscus) my knee now feels really good and i feel like i can do anythign - there is just always this feeling in the back of my mind - if i do it again - i'm stuffed. why don't you wait for a few more months and see what happens - good luck to you
