View Full Version : ankle bruising?????
Hey all i'm louise i sprained my ankle about 6 weeks ago and i am still havin problems with it i have been goin to physio (who said i have ligment damage) its seemed to help a little not much i went bak to Doc the other day i had a X-ray done to exclude any fractures the report said that i had really bad bruising around the outside part of my ankle joint which seem right but when i wake up in the morning the first couple steps i take are very painful and when i walk down stair it make a 'cracking' noise is this normal? i feel there might be some other problem. i play cricket (both indoor and outdoor) and the season is fast approaching so i was wondering how long to the bruising will go away? will playing sport cause it to not heal probably? and wat with the cracking when i walk down stairs?
please if u can help i would lov it
Lewi
All I can suggest is to keep ice on it whenever you can. That will help with the swelling and bruising and may help with the pain. Take some Neurofen to help with the swelling as well.
The ligament damage may heal itself up but that'll depend on whether or not the ligament(s) are just badly strained, torn or completely ruptured.
Ice it and give it as much rest as possible and then see how it goes. If it's still troubling you, then I would suggest seeing a Sports doctor.
Thanks alot for your advice i will take it on board my ligament weren't torn just strained the physio gave me excercises to help strengthen the ligaments and muscles and he also gave me balancing excercises too and told me to strap it when playing sport i can walk and run i don't feel any pain its only when i do activities that require turning fast that's when i feel pain i play alot of cricket both indoor and outdoor i am a medium pace bowler will me bowling cause further damage? and another Questions wats go with the cracking pretty much every time i rotate it around?
Thanks again Lewi
I wouldn't know what the cracking sound is. Maybe someone else might know.
I remember I sprained my ankle really badly when I was playing Rugby League and I had to strap it to play. Long after the ankle was fully healed I kept strapping it only because I thought I wouldn't be able to play properly without it and that something might happen to my ankle if I didn't. It's a psychological thing.
Just try not to tape it when you don't need it. Long-term taping can weaken the joints.
Good luck!

Hi there. I really badly sprained my ankle (the morning of my broehter's wedding doing a skit for his wedding video) about 20 months ago. Plenty of physio and rest has help the swelling go down, but the strength in the ankle is another story. I had no strength in the ankle for some 12 months after the sprain, and now only have limited strength. In the 12 months immediately after the sprain, if my ankle would roll (even just walking along the footpath and encountering the slightest unevenness), my ankle would roll over again, causing me a significant amount of pain, and in some cases, I would just fall to the ground. There was some residual swelling around the ankle for a totoal of 18 months. Now that the swelling has gone down, I can still feel the ankle is not as strong as the other one, and it cracks, and fells loose. I would say that I have done some ligament damage, but am not going to go through the pain and ordeal of a reconstruction. My competitive sporting days have somewhat come to an end at the age of 33. Some people say that severe ankle sprains can take up to 2 years to fully heal, longer than actually breaking a bone. My suggestion to you is do some strengthening exercises and do not play any sport without strapping your ankle under any circumstances. Good Luck

It sounds like it's giving you a fair bit of trouble though. 33 is still pretty young to be putting up with your ankle rolling at the slightest hint of an incline on the ground.
Have you had it checked out? It might be something really simple. It's easy to think the worst with all injuries I know, but I would get it looked at.
At the very least you'll end up with confirmation or a pretty good idea of what exactly is wrong with it.
You've got nothing to lose, except the pain (and maybe the Doctors fee).
Thanks yeah the physio gave me strengthing excercises to do and some balancing exercises too which i do most mornings i just hope i don't re-injurie it though the cricket season cause i not havin the best of luck cause when i first sprainned my right ankle i had also sprainned the other one a couple of days before so i sprained both my ankles in matter of a week but the other one wasn't has near bad has the one i am havin trouble with if anyone knows why it cracks when i rotate it or even walk for that matter i would like to know?
thanks

Most ankle sprains are pretty good by 6 weeks.
Other diagnoses include:
syndesmosis injury (bruising occurs above ankle)
Talar Dome Fracture (explains clicking)
Meniscoid lesion
A CT scan can be ordered by a GP and exclude talar dome #
Stress XRs, or exam under anaesthesia can sort out syndesmosis.
Some cases are suitable for an injection of cortisone to settle synovitis in the joint. Arthroscopy & excision of meniscoid lesion is proably a bit too soon..
Clicking per se is not a problem, only if it's painful. Tendons can click over the front of the ankle in normal people.
thanks for your help one other thing Cause i play alot of cricket both indoor and outdoor should i strap it for every training session and game? and say if when i bowl and i feel pain in my ankle should i keep playing or stop staight away? i am a medium pace bowler and i do bowl a fair amount of overs sometimes so yeah chicks rule at playin cricket lol :-)

Yep. Had it checked out and the Doc, but only had an X-ray. The symptoms the doc said are those associated with ankle ligament damage. Physio and strengthening work do help, but the ankle still feels "loose".
The rolling has improved alothugh it is still weak.
Thanks
Sorry to hear that then. I don't know much about ankles, only how to treat them when they're sprained.
If it really bothers you, then check out a Foot & Ankle specialist rather then a normal GP. Otherwise, keep up the Physio I guess. It might just be one of those things you have to live with unfortunately.
Good luck with it.

Those Wobble boards are great for strengthening ankles up.
hey there just a Quick Question i had cricket training today i had my ankle straped the way the physio showed i did a fair amount of bowling i felt little pain every now and then didn't really bother me that much until i stop it started to hurt a little and when i took the strapping tap off it swelled up a fair bit i put ice on it do reduce the swelling my Question is should i put ice on it after every training session or game for that matter? is the swelling normal? how long to the swelling will stop?
thanks again Lewi
Ice it as often as you need to. To be conservative maybe Ice it every time you finish training or a game for the next 2 -3 weeks.
I don't know how long the swelling will last. That depends on how quickly your ankle recovers and how much strain you put on it.
Take it slow with the bowling until your ankle feels comfortable enough to handle it.

Hi Lewi,
I fractured my ankle with ruptered ligaments about the 15th august. I was on crutches for three weeks and limping for another three. Even after nearly 2 months I've got a fair way to got to completely rehab it. My doctor who is a surgeon advises me not to run for six months. I did not require surgery or even a cast and the doctor explained that the ligament damage was the worst of it. If I was you I would not be playing any sport where you feel pain. This is obviously your ankle telling you it's not ready. I have sprained ankles before and they can take easy 6 months to come good. To the extent where you are no longer conscious of it when your competing. Make sure you elevate your ankle as well whenever it's swollen to let the swelling drain and get yourself a compression stocking from foot to knee and wear it when you play and after to help swelling.
Do not neglect your ankle or you will be sorry in the long run.
Cheers.
Mick.
HEY :-)

Good LuckWell, I too had a very bad sprained a couple years ago. Ligaments were torned and had no choice but going for surgery. My problem did not stop there. 8 months after the surgery, doing physio 3x a week, and I am still in quite a bit of pain. I am in the same position, while walking, if I come accross the smalest bump on the ground, the edge of a carpet, or even some crums on the floor will cause me extreme pain in my ankle. I went back to the specialist for the x times and he finally gave in and recommended me for a MRI (magnetic resonance image). This test showed that I suffer from wear and tear arthritis (ostearthritis) which is the direct result of trauma caused to my ankle when I sprained it. I was prescripe anti-inflamatory and instructed to reduce to the very minimum all physical activity. After a couple of week, I feel that my pain has started to decrease...[/

Hey There
At the start of May I badly rooled my ankle playing netball. Second week into the seasion. It has been six months and things are good. I have a physical disablity and with this disabilty I have had lots of operation on my ankles. Rolling an ankle is not a common things for me, but I have never rolled it this bad before.
Don't worry about your ankle and think about it. You know your own foot. I missed most of the seasion with this injury and I tried to play to early and sort of took four steps back. I still have swelling and I strap my ankle when I play netball and I always will. Safety thing again.

I broke my ankle over three years ago and returned to play competitive rugby about 5-6 months afterwards. (i broke the lat malleolus - it was not pinned). At the time of injury i was kept in as the plan was to pin it, and there was concern that the talus had shifted position - but it wasnt done. anyway - i played from september - december for my uni rugby team - but that christmas and at the end of the season i could barely walk. i went back to my physio who referred me back to the hospital. i had an mri, which maybe showed osteochondral lesion on the talus, and a possible abnormality around the peroneus tendon sheath. i then had an arthroscopy during which scar tissue was removed from the front of the ankle joint. This helped nothing, so 3 weeks ago i had a peroneal tendon exploration, which revealed that the brevis had a period that was flattened possibly it was said from an old repaired tear, everything else looked normal - and there was no accesory quartus tendon. apart from the pain around the lat malleolus, and tendon sheath area, my ankle has never been free from bruising since i broke it. it is green and has been for over three years. i have ful range of movement in the ankle, but it feels bruised and weak. im wondering if now i seek a vasular surgeon to try his 50 cents worth? does anyone have any ideas? i havent played rugby since, i get pins and needles in my heel periodically - and i dont think at 23 i should be bruised for three years without explanation.
any ideas? (gardenmuscles@hotmail.com)

hi lewi,
i am diagnosed with ankle bruising as well. It has been 18 long months and it still hasn't fully healed. From what i know, this ankle bruising thing isn't very common in ankles. My specialist told me that there might be a problem with the cartilage, and i'm scheduled for surgery in a weeks time. I'll briefly describe the symtoms i have and u can see if there is any similarities. I still can do most sport, and still play soccer often. However, the pain can come suddenly and disappears as quickly as well. I've noticed u experience pain when u stop while playing cricket, i experience the pain sometimes after my soccer games. But it will usually go away in a couple of days. If u are expecting the bruising to go away soon, it won't. prolly u might consider surgery like what im doing..
since this is a rare case maybe someone who has undergone surgery already can share some insights on after the surgery?
cheers
