Hawthorn described 'dodging' a bullet when Jonathan Hay was found to have avoided knee ACL damage in an early pre-season practice match in Tasmania. Unfortunately the club appears to have since been the victim of a drive-by with a machine gun since that time. The most costly victim is Hay himself, who has suffered a different injury to the same knee, which appears to be only semi-related to the initial diagnosis. Read more at realfooty. Hay has ruptured the hamstring tendon insertion at the knee and has required a surgical repair. The suggested recovery time by the club is six weeks, but tendon repair surgery usually means 8-12, with the attitude this time being not to rush the recovery. Other players have been dropping as if cursed in recent weeks, with Steven Greene and Kris Barlow out with PCL injuries, Chance Bateman and Nick Holland suffering hamstring problems, John Barker having a jarred kneecap and Tim Boyle out for the season with a fractured tibia.
