Hello all
My 10 year old son hurt his ankle while at youth football. We took him to the er and the x-ray showed the two plates on the right ankle werent lined up. The Doctor said the growth plate was shifted. they put a fiber glass spint on and also was given crutches. The Dr then said follow up with ortho... I called primary Dr as I needed his refferral for the ortho and he said the radiology intail report said probably negitive for fracture although that was not the final report, primary Dr said wait a couple of days then take splint off and start walking on it.. said nothing about going to ortho Dr.. Im not sure what is going on now. I saw the x-ray in the er and she explained what we were looking at.. is it posible the x-ray was wrong?? Should I take my son to the ortho Dr anyways just to be sure since thats what they specialize in.
I will give a little more info on the injury. 2 weeks before the er visit he came home from practice and said his ankle hurt because he got tackled and someone landed on his foot there was no swelling. The next day he said nothing about any pain. five days ago during warm ups his ankle was hurting alot and he ended up sitting out of practice.. coach advised we take him in to the er and have it checked so we did.. Now Im not sure if anything is wrong or not.. any feedback on this?
Thanks busymom

dear busymom
hi my daughter broke her growth plate playing soccor 5 years ago like you i took her to er and was told growth plate broken but nothing to worry about 3 days later i took her to my gp told him what happened and he sent her for xrays we went start back to him and within 2 mins he was on the phone to a bone speailist and 2 days later my daughter was being operated on and i was told if it was left any longer that her leg would never grow so i suggest that you get to a bone spec and see what they have to say for the sake of you son or he may never play sports again and his leg may never grow hope you have luck and please let me know how you went
good luck

Hi, I'm a physio and I can definitely tell you not to mess around with potential growth plate injuries. Get it checked out by an ortho with a special interest in juveniles.
