As some of you might know, I partially tore my ACL back in May and had a Partial Lateral Meniscectomy at the beginning of August.

It's 8 weeks post scope and I tried to run the other day. Jogging wasn't too bad, but sprinting was out. My leg felt weird when I tried to sprint at a decent pace. Hard to describe it but it felt kind of like the knee joint was going backwards and forwards simultaneously. And although my knee feels stronger after all the physio and weights I've been doing, it still feels.. weak... is I guess the best word to describe it. Maybe even loose.

I'm not game to try it again because I nearly fell flat on my face.

So what do you think; should I go see my OS and see what he thinks, or just dismiss it as part of the healing process because it's only been 8 weeks and these things take time to heal etc

Seriously?????? See your OS. The feeling that you describe is exactly what I felt..... My knee didnt hurt, and wasnt swollen, but there was just something about it that didnt feel right. I have a feeling that the loss of trust that you are describing in your knee is very similar to what I experienced, even when I had 3 GPs tell me it was ok. I knew that something was still wrong and so I saw different Drs till it was finally I got hold of a sports specialist... he had me sorted in minutes, and actually said that the fact that I'd lost confidence in the knee was an indicator of what I'd done. You know your own body.... get it sorted and you can start recovering!

See an OS

Loss of trust. That's exactly the words I was looking for.

I'm really not sure if the retarded running is because I don't trust it so I'm trying to protect it (Fear of re-injury etc), or if it's the ACL.

I'm thinking about heading down to a Park or something to go for a bit of a run and see how it pulls up.

I think you might find it is a combination of those things!!

How did the run go??

Well I went down today to give it a bit of a run and thankfully it went pretty well.

I wasn't able to fully stretch it out because my Quads and Hammies are still a bit sore from the weights session I did on Wednesday.

I did some sprinting at pretty much full pace, a bit of jogging and some agility. Lateral stepping was a bit iffy with the pain so I didn't push that, but everything else seemed to be ok. A signifigant improvement from last time.

I had a bit of that niggly loose feeling, but it didn't seem too bad today. I still don't trust my knee as far as I can throw it.

I'm going to try and see my OS sometime next week if I can. He was pretty eager for me to have a Reco straight away anyway so I'm not looking forward to what he says. The bloodthirsty bastard! :p

I mentioned it to my Physio today and she didn't think it was anything to worry about. Just said it would take time for the knee to adjust without the meniscus and that it was a good sign I was able to run.

I agree that what she said but I'm still not 100% convinced. I think I'll still try and fit in an appointment to my OS this week if I can.

Do I need to get a new referral to see him or can I book straight in?

You can see an orthopod without a new referral about the same problem within 12 months.

You probably should give it a little more time, but if your knee feels unstable 3 months post-scope, then you might be looking at a reco.

I agree to be honest. Being a reco patient, and having that same lack of trust I certainly agree. I think that if your knee is unstable then you are going to have that feeling of not trusting it. Before my reco I was too scared to run because my knee was so unreliable... it actually was buckling if I just changed my weight while standing still..... so running was really scary. After the op, I trust it heaps more, although Im still wary of it because I went so long not trusting it. After the reco the feeling is different, it isnt that I dont trust the knee stability wise, it is more that it has been sore from the recovery that I am wary of moving the wrong way incase I hurt it. Having said that... I am quickly getting over that..... there are times now where I have completely forgotten that I recently had the reconstruction.... a sure sign that Im getting over it.

I reckon that perhaps you give it a bit longer and check in with your OS to put your mind at rest.... or solve the issue if there is one to be solved.

I probably am being a bit hasty with it but I just want to get it right ASAP.

I'll give it more time I and just work harder in rehab then. Thanks for the advice guys.

Hey it is perfectly understandable wanting to get it right..... we've been there.... I know what it is like.
