Not usual for the ankle to click, although if it is not painful then it may not be a big problem. If it is tendons clicking out of their sheath it is worth attending to. Clicking coming from the joint may or may not be a problem depending on whether there is anything else wrong in the joint (swelling, pain etc).

I badly sprained my ankle twice within the space of about 4 weeks roughly 2 years ago. It's fine now and doesn't cause me any problems, but it clicks sometimes when I walk or have it in a certain position.
I guess it's just one of those things.
hey there I badly sprained my ankle about 2.5 months ago its pretty much bak to normal its gives me a bit trouble every know and then but its still fairly weak. After i injuried my ankle it has since made a cracking/clicking sound when i walk, go down stairs or even rotate my ankle so yeah there is little tiny pain and its does however still swell up but people tell my that the swelling we gradually go away and that the cracking/clicking is normal so yeah i play alot of indoor and outdoor cricket so i need fairly good ankles.

Hi!
I'm a long term ankle-injury sufferer, and have had the ligaments in one ankle reconstructed already (with the other not too far off sadly!). It's part of my normal day for my ankles to both click regularly, (usually first thing in the morning, or after I've been doing a lot of sport etc), and my left knee (which I've injured a few times) also does it. Both my orthopaedic surgeons have told me it's just a side effect of the damage I've done, and there's not much they can do, but it's nothing serious!

Ive started to get pain now everytime my ankle click....... its like a discomfort sort of pain....... it is worth getting checked out
opinons please........
Does it sort of feel like something has gotten stuck or released each time? And what sort of treatment have you had in the past - physio etc? I'd say go see a doctor for a referral for x-rays first, then go from there?

Yep that is exactly how it feels sometimes it feels numb and i get pins and needles .......when i get injured i see a physio depending on the injury.... But when i hurt my ankle i didnt see a physio only cause i had like a week or so to recover fast and i had a really important competion so i just saw my doctor

Must admit I'm a big believer in physios being the best (or at least better) ones to get you back on your feet quick smart - they have access to a lot more inflammation-specific treatments than most doctors (or at least those that I've seen anyway - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here!), and I know my physios never struggled to get me right in the early days (well, before the damage got too severe anyway!).
If it feels like there's something being trapped, have you seen a manipulative physiotherapist? Mine does mainpulation and it was sheer heaven on my poor ankle for a while there! If you're going numb or getting pins and needles, I'd hazard a guess that there's some nerve crunching of some sort happening - where abouts do you exactly get the pain etc? Is it in a particular part of the foot or toes, or just general "all over" problems?

I havent seen a manipulative physiotherapist.......... Its mainly an
"all over" pain... during the day i get soime pain but it seems to flare up most when i play footy.......... when i play its alright i can feel it clicking but thers no pain cause i have so much adrenalin pumping through me but after the games i can hardly walk i ice but it does nothing..... ive just learned to live with it i tape it up everyday weather im playing sport or not just for that support..... i know i should see someone but i just have to many inportant competitions coming up
Must say that sounds SOOOO Familiar! I used to say that all the time, but when my ankle completely gave out on me, I couldn't even walk, let alone compete. It's taken six years since then to get my body right to even play footy once a week, and I'm not even 22, so I'd say get help before it's too late!
I've found my physios have been very understanding of my love of sport, and have never said to me "you can't do this, you can't do that" - they've made recommendations, but know that if they tell me to sit down and stop doing stuff I'll totally go against them more out of sheer frustration than anything (I'm one of these suckers who loves sport too much and goes insane not doing anything!). If you hunt around, you'll be able to find a good physio who understands your want to play, and will be able to work treatment around it unless it's a dire situation.
I'd actually recommend it quick smart, especially if you're using taping so much - as much as it provides support, it can cause your own natural support structures (muscles, ligaments etc) to weaken and get lazy, which doesn't help you in the long run. I work as a trainer with some Aussie Rules players, and the only times I tape them are for matches if I can help it, and I take them through a heap of strengthening exercsies as soon as they're able so that they can "learn" to support themselves quickly and safely without needing tons of tape.

Cause im so used to taping it, it feels really funny when its not taped...... Yes and I am one of these suckers who loves sport too much and goes insane not doing anything.... plus i hate going to the doctors..

hey my ankles have been clicking for years and im 15 and they started from 9 -10 years of age at first i was over weight ( i thought it was cus of that) and it sorta hurt to walk after i had done sport and whenever i would trotate my ankle it would click and wont stop clicking on both legs now ive lost the weight and its still clicking it doesnt rele hurt at all but it clicks loud enough for people to hear it (does it stunt your growth )although I dont think it clicks when i walk it clicks when i roatae it and sometimes when i click it after playing basketball my leg feels somewhat relieved. sometimes I get a sorta funny pain(like how most people get it in their elbow) in my ankle were it felt like it was looked in a spot and i got pins and needles and it limits the rotation and to get rid of it i have to try to click it really hard .now my knees are clicking(clicks which dont hurt either ) when i tense my leg and bring it up and down it only clicks when i make it click does anyone know whats wrong with my ankle is there soemthing wrong with my knees 2. could someone get back to me on this plz... thanks

For those of you with the clicking, then probably best to go to the doctor (even if you hate it) and get it checked out. My knees click and have done for years, it doesn't hurt and is appently no problem at all. My ankles click, one much more so than the other (one is nothing, but the other is osteoarthritis is bad enough that I am getting an ankle replacement in 10 days, and I'm young).
There are a number of things which can cause clicking in a joint and they can be totally insignificant right the way through to an early warning of something more serious. So just go and get it checked. If you love sport as I do, then looking after yourself properly is going to keep you performing at your peak for longer!

I badly sprained my ankle (black halfway up my leg) playing basketball about 25 years ago. Ankle has clicked since then but never impeded any activity. You certainly could hear me walking in barefeet on a concrete floor. It has never bothered me at all so it is not necessarily a problem. I wouldn't mess with it unless it is causing you some sort of substantial pain or impairment.
