View Full Version : Ankle pain

I've been having some pain in my left ankle, on the outside, seemingly involving the calcaneal fibular ligament.

I don't recall actually spraining it, not with any acute injury, but this morning I was trying running up stairs and it felt like that ankle was going to give way. It seems to have a lot of trouble supporting my weight if I go up on my toes on that leg.

What I have noticed is that since I had some sesamoid pain in my left toe, the wear in my shoes is very much on the outside of my running shoes, rather than the inside which I used to get with my overpronation.

I wonder if I've trained my foot to run on the outside and that's put too much strain on the ligament?

Anyway, three questions:
1) If I tape it similarly to how I taped my right ankle after I sprained it, should that provide a bit more support?
2) Should I replace my shoes or finally bite the bullet and get fitted for proper orthotics to deal with my overpronation etc?
3) What kind of exercises should I do to strengthen the muscles around it and try and give it more support?

I went back to edit this but I was too late.

I'm just making a note that there's no swelling on my left ankle at all. Not like when I did a grade 2 sprain on my right and it swelled up like a watermelon.

Definitely wouldn't hurt to do some ankle exercises like stretches, balance exercises, and get back to sport with tape (as it sounds that you know how to do it).

If this isn't working then it goes without saying that it would be smart to see your physio or doctor.

Yep. I'm a bit bummed because my physio who I developed a really good relationship and history with up and moved to the US recently. Normally I'd just get on the phone and see what he thought.

I dread those balance and stretching exercises! It was quite frustrating doing them after my last sprain. You just feel so useless having absolutely no balance or coordination. Or at least less than usual ;-)

Much worse feeling having your ankle give way though!
