Hello guys,

This is my first post, i hope some of you can help me out.

I have had a groin injury for a few months now and its really getting to me. I have been to see a sports physio who told me i had a knot in my adductor muscles and he gave me some stretches/exercises to do. He told me to ice it for 2 days, then apply ice then heat then ice then heat etc. He said it should be ok in a week to play again. The problem hasnt gone away... this is what happens:

When i rest my leg, my groin feels fine, no pain when jogging etc so i return to football (soccer) and warm up properly etc.

After 15 - 20 mins of playing my groin starts to get tight on the right hand side. It doesnt hurt as such, but i can feel its not right. (today when i played, i felt the pain start after about 20 mins as i was sprinting, but jogging was ok.

After about 30 mins, I can still jog ok with little pain, but pain starts to get worse. By half time (45 mins) it hurts to jog and sprint, but walking is ok.

At half time (sometimes i come off, but today i didnt) i spreyed it with deap heat (prob a mistake) and it just got worse and worse the longer i played. I had to come off after about 75 mins because i could hardly lift my leg up when walking/jogging/running. At this point, it hurt to walk too but really hurt when i sprinted.

It is now about 6 hours after the game and iv had ice on it. Now, it feels fine when i walk but i get pain if i stand still and lift my knee up to my chest. Tomorow morning it will prob be sore/tight then ok in the afternoon, but by Tuesday it will be feel fine.

The pain is located at the front of my groin area right in the crease at the top ov my leg. Its about in the middle ov the crease, if that makes sense.

I really dont know what to do, i have previously rested it for 3 weeks and it feels fine but the same pain keeps happening when i return to football. Im getting really unfit now as i do no exercise in the week, and i dont really want to stop playing because i fear i will lose my position, although i will if i have to, but rest dont seem to help.

Does anyone have any idea what my injury could be as im not convinced its a knotted adductor muscle as the sports physio suggests and my confidence and game are slowly getting worse and worse.

Any advice would be GREAT...

Thanks for your time.

Mabbo

I feel your pain my friend,
my advice to you is get a second persons opinion.
I have had groin/hip pain for a year and no one seems to know what it is ...

Groin area is hard to diagnose, even with MRI etc. Lots of experts disagree on diagnosis. Adductor tendinitis/osteitis pubis and hip cartilage tears are usually the most common problems.

Dr Mel Cusi at Orthosports has done a lot of work in this area.

Mabbo, first time on this forum :-( but would like to make two points :- 1 Groin pain may well be associated with Sacro iliac joint pathology and Mel Cusi is an expert. 2 Have you had an MVA where you have gone into impact with your right foot hard on the brake? A shock wave goes up your leg across your hip joint and due to the alignment of your hip and sijt it displaces and rotates the sijt. You can also get the same injury from a fall on the leg (notice I did not say 'legs' ) or from pregnancy or other more obscure ways.

Hi there. Your symptoms sound exactly what I've had for 9 years. I have finally been diagnosed after several mis-diagnoses, as having a labral tear with a cyst, in the hip joint. I have no pain whatsoever in the hip itself. The surgeon explained the groin pain which also runs down my front thigh and now into my knee, is referred pain. Sure enough, an MRI showed the tear and cyst. I'm having surgery on 14th February 2006 to correct. Apparently a labral tear is the most mis-diagnosed hip problem
Ordinary x-rays don't show the tear - only an MRI scan. In New Zealand where I live, all cost is covered by ACC (Accident Compensation Commission), including surgery, as I originally did the injury during an exercise at aquarobics.
Ask about a labral tear next time you see your GP. I was referred to an orthopaedic surgeon who knew what was wrong within 5 minutes of hearing my symptoms. These were on standing, intense groin pain going down the thigh, and after a few more years it now goes into the knee. Cycling is the worse for the symptoms, and I can walk about 4kms, then the pain sets in.
Good luck.

Hey mate,
One source of pain, in the place you describe at the front of groin crease, is caused by inflammation from the adductor tendon, it joins on to the pubic bone, which is the bone you can feel down there.
An ultrasound or MRI will most likely get the best results if you want to have a look at that area. Steroid injections can be useful as well if tendonitis is diagnosed in that area.

HI there
my names jordy and im 14 and ive had exactly the same symptons on my right leg right in that crease bit for about a week now

i skate alot and i assume its from skating
when i skate there is alot of pressure and impact on my right leg
when i lift it up to do a trick i get a pain in that crease area
and when i push my hip is uninlined (if thats a word) and i also think it could be due to that
also when i do a trick i gerk or swing my leg up and u said u play soccer which also involves swinging to kick the ball. It could be due to that.
i dont know how to treat it but i hope i helped
