This is a bit of a quick postcard from the UK. The main injury news of the month here is Michael Owen's 5th MT fracture, which looked to have an acute mechanism, but judging by the fact he is having a pin put in they probably think the mechanism involved chronic stress. Of interest is that he has mentioned that half of the England first soccer/football team has a history of metatarsal fracture. Most of these would be stress fractures. The list includes David Beckham, Steve Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Gary Neville and Ashley Cole. Because Owen is a fifth, his optimism about quick healing may not necessarily be well placed, as these have a history of recurrence, particularly if the screw/rod/nail put in the 5th MT isn't a whopping great size. For some reason it seems that the bigger the better for these internal fixations, but not that every surgeon has come to this conclusion yet.

Also from the UK is that Johnny Wilkinson is having a slow recovery from a hernia repair. Interesting he has developed chronic groin pain in the scenario of not having played rugby at a decent level for 2 years due to other injuries. This is not uncommon. His body is looking at best fragile and at worst shot to bits, but he has such talent he should still be a good player if and when he makes it back.
