Hurricanes openside flanker Ben Herring will miss the Super 14 rugby season as he recovers from a knee injury.

Scans on his left knee revealed widespread cartilage damage, the Hurricanes said on Tuesday.

He is expected to be out of action for six months.

"I'm pretty gutted about missing the season, especially because it's the first Super 14 but now my focus is on my rehab," Herring said.

Coach Colin Cooper said Herring was a big loss but the important thing was for him to get his body right.

"An opportunity now presents itself for Serge (Lilo) and he shows a lot of promise, but obviously the development of Chris Masoe as a seven has even greater significance for us now.

"We are also fortunate that Rodney (So'oialo) has played a bit of seven in recent times and could be used as cover there also."

Lilo's position in the Hurricanes wider training group has been filled by Wellington loose forward Faifili Levave.
