I'm thinking about going to see a GP/specialist about my ankle, which is giving me cause for concern (more so after reading some of the posts here which puts me off going to see someone to tell me something I don't want to hear!!).

a) I'm not sure what the process is here to obtain the best and most relevant treatment in Australia (this is my first time I've had to use the medical system after arriving form Hong Kong a couple of years ago - I live in Perth)

b) I used to play half-decent level (1st grade Uni) soccer in the UK and received a badly sprained ankle with awful swelling when I was about 22 - my leg was black and blue up to the knee. In hindsight, the treatment I received in the UK was not very good compared to treatment I've received for other sports injuries when I lived elsewhere.

I moved to HK I took up rugby and never had too many problems with my ankle although movement was restricted and there was still swelling.

I've now dropped the rugby due to family committments and have taken up cycling supplemented by some 5 aside soccer Its now 10 years after the injury and whilst my ankle doesn't give me real pain it aches after playing soccer and is visibly and permanently swollen...

Have I reason to worry about this or could this just be old scar material. If it is, is it a relatively simple process to fix/improve the condition - does anyone else have any similar experiences?

Hi Gordon
Think you should definitely get a specialist to have a look at your ankle. It sounds like you might have ankle arthiritis. I broke my ankle and then had an op to fix it, the docs said I would make a full recovery but didn't and eventually went to see a specialist after having pain on the ankle for about a year. I have had two further ops on the ankle but i still get a bit of pain from it. The specialist said that if I had come to see him sooner then treating the ankle would have been alot easier as whilst I had been running on my still sore ankle I was doing further damage to it. GPs had told me that my ankle was fine and I was only referred to a specialist after repeated requests... My advice would be to stop doing anything which causes pain and swelling and go and see an ankle specialist as soon as you can
