Has failed a fitness test and is not playing in the one dayer against Sri Lanka. Looks like a day to day management is on the cards to last the the tour.

He still has to back up for the return series in South Africa Against the Aussies as well. Maybe he needs a big rest like India were forced to do with Tendulkar?

JACQUES Kallis was a late withdrawal from South Africa's limited-overs side to face Sri Lanka today after his elbow injury worsened.

LIVE: South Africa v Sri Lanka, the Gabba

The star all rounder has been struggling with the injury for the entire tour and missed the first Test against Australia as a result late last year.

However, he bounced back to score a century in the Sydney Test in the New Year, but appears to have succembed once again to the tennis-elbow-type ailment.

"Unfortunately Jacques's elbow has flared up again, which is a bit of a worry," South Africa captain Graeme Smith said after winning the toss at the Gabba and electing to bowl.

"We'll just have to monitor him over the next few days."

The Proteas will top the VB Series table if they beat Sri Lanka today having beaten Australia on Sunday at the same venue by five wickets.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, is desperate for a victory after suffering a terrible run of limited-overs results.

It dropped batsman Michael Vandort, who made a painstaking 48 against Australia, as well as bowler Dilhara Fernando for today's game.

South African star batsman Jacques Kallis is set to be rushed home and may be in doubt for the start of the return Test series against Australia in March.

Kallis was a late scratching from the Proteas tri-series match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday after suffering a painful reoccurrence of an elbow injury in the lead-up to the game.

He had scans on the injury and captain Graeme Smith said Kallis faced a lengthy sideline stint to overcome the problem.

Smith said he expected Kallis to be fit for the return Test series but believed he would be ruled out of the preceding one-day series.

"He had a rescan today and it doesn't look good," he said. "It would pretty much look like he's going home."

It is the latest in a string of injury woes on tour for South Africa, which has already sent home strike bowlers Makhaya Ntini (hamstring-knee) and Andre Nel (foot) this month.

Kallis missed the Perth Test last month because of the problem, similar to the tennis elbow that put Indian maestro Sachin Tendulkar out of cricket last year.

The world's No.2 Test batsman seemingly put it behind him with fighting displays in the Melbourne and Sydney Tests, including a century and unbeaten 50 at the SCG.

But the latest flare-up has the Proteas on edge in the lead-up to next month's return leg of their summer-long battle with Australia.

Kallis's batting and part-time medium-pace is crucial to their Test hopes and the tourists will decide on Wednesday whether to send him home to Cape Town for treatment.

Smith rued the injury today but wants to err on the side of caution with injuries to his senior players, including a groin strain to Charl Langeveldt.

Smith, who had warned against Ntini being rushed back into the tri-series squad today for Nel, said some "tough decisions" needed to be made.

"It's the way the tour has gone and some tough decisions need to be made in the next few days," he said.

"It's disappointing and frustrating but we have to get through it."

Smith's message seems to have got through back home, South Africa's selectors opted against sending Ntini back to Australia despite him passing a fitness test on Monday.

Instead 22-year-old speedster Dale Steyn will join the squad on Wednesday.
