I have suffered from what I only know as a quad strain on 5 different occasions over the past 30 months. I seem to be able to train, build up my fitness & then during football season ( afl ) the injury reaccurs. This seems to happen when I start doing kicking exercises. I will often feel a sharp pain in my quad ( in various parts ) & when ever I tense that muscle it & especially when I go through the kicking motoin ( worse when contact by the ball to my foot is made ) it is much more painful. After I the injury has occured there seems to be a large amount of inflamation & heat generated. I was wonderering if anyone has experinced these type of symtons & what can be done to stop this injury from reaccuring. Any information would be handy.
Cheers Justin

Justin,

I had a similar injury when I was approx 20 years of age. Eventually I went to see a sports physician after many months of accupuncture and physio doing nothing. The SP sent me for a scan which reveiled I had a form of heamotoma or blood clot. Not the type that can kill you but a mass formed around where the quad continued to bleed. The scar tissue never healed and eventually I had to have the mass surgically removed. 6 weeks after the operation I was back playing and although I have an extensive scar on my leg I have not had any loss of power or restriction since.
My advice would be to get a scan if possible and speak to a qualified expert to get further treatment advice.

hey,

im currently on my high schools track team, and i mainly do long jump, hurdles, and high jump, i have searched and searched, googled and googled, and i have found lots of different theries of what my proble is. however i fall into a few catagories, but not where it is 100% that injury. i have parts of the Rupture of the rectus femoris tendon, i experience the pain, but however, on the upper part of my thigh, not near my knee, it feels like a strain, but its to the point know where it has hurt for about 10 days, and no signs of getting better. Whenever i make it to about 80% and up when running, a sharp pain is felt within my thigh and it hurts like no other. but if i stay below 80%, i am fine and don't feel a thing. do any of you have an idea of what i have done or any help for me?

Thanks

Jim

Quads strains (if bad) can take up to 5 weeks to get right, particularly if you're an athlete requiring max strength and power. Don't panic. Do your stretches within pain, run (below pain), and let you muscle heal and respond to good rehab, not a rushed one.

Hope this helps

Tim

The same exact thing has been happening to me. Last week i was doing fine through soccer practice and then I took a shot and felt a pop in my upper quad. I went to the ground and felt a slight pain for about seven days. Then today at soccer pratice i was doing fine with jogging and stretches, then the first kick of the ball the same thing happened, just not as painful. I am able to ride my bike for miles and feel no pain at all. I am wondering if i have that same blood clot problem and i wonder if i need to see a doctor. If anyone has any advice that would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Will

After 13 years out of the game I did the same Tuesday last week. Trained again on Thursday only lasted half the session, Physio tomorrow morning to see if i have done serious damage.
It’s a pain in the ass, my reco knee feels 100% but my quad feels like its blown up, shattered!!!
I was just starting to find touch and feel good then BANG!!

Will keep posted.

Update

Slight quad strain, deep massage and compression bandage, gave me the OK to train at 80% suck and see how it goes!!

I have recently started training to play soccer again after about 4 seasons off. My fitness is below par and have been working hard to catch up to the younger more agile players. On Tuesday night while stretching I noticed a very minor strain right at the top of my quad towards groin height when holding foot behind bottom to stretch quad (we had a gruelling running session week before that I feared I had pushed myself too hard in preseason). I warmed up during the running exercises (unhindered) but when we got into a small game scenario (no shooting) my quad got progressively worse to the point where I couldnt run and pulled up lame. That night I iced my thigh and could barely walk, any flexing of quad to reposition leg while sitting or lying down was very painful. Next morning i could walk okay but could feel the strain when walking stairs but not painful. Thursday was fine during the day before going to training, tried deep heat on quad and warmed up well, could still feel strain when stretching quad. Then I tried to hit a cross and bang, sharp pain to quad, a bit lower than last time, pretty painful. Tried to keep running but got worse again. Now I dont know what rehab I should adopt and how long before I try and play again, i.e. how long before strain is healed so I can kick 100%. Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi Mengy

I will start by saying that I am 33 years of age and playing 3rds Soccer. Not the highest grade going around but great bunch of blocks.
As for my injury long story short, have been training now since February and only now is it starting to get better. Last week was the first time I kicked a ball flat out.
Tried Phyiso and Ciro, I found that my hips were out of line and that MAY have had some effect.
Bottom line is and I have read every article going around. DON’T kick and don’t run over 80%. Hard thing to do but its all that you can do. Trying to go flat chat will only stuff it up. Time, Heat Ice lower back and groin to get blood flowing through. I stretch now more then ever, spend 20 min before training and whenever I am standing still I stretch.
From what I read it can take a month to get up and running, that all depends on how much time you give yourself, Kicking is the worst thing you can do riding helps GOOD LUCK.

Hey all, i have read many of these posts and my injury is kinda different from most. I have been weight training for about 3 months. two days ago i did lower body. i put alot of emphasis on my quads, probably did more than i should have. so the day i worked out, my quads seemed fine. the next day both my legs started to stiff up but not bad, cuz i worked an 8 hour shift. that night i had the worst sleep of my life.

now its been 3 days and the last 2 days have been unberable. i mean u guys are able to stretch and practice and everything. i cant even walk or bend my legs. i have been in so much pain its insane, never have felt this much pain. doctor said something about muscle inflamation blha blha gave me medicine that does jack all. whats going on, what should i do, have only slept for 3 hours in the last 2 days because i cant even lay down without moving, lol sorry i cant even move around because of the pain. help pleaseee.

Hi i am now just finishing up with socccer season and for the past 4 weeks i have been experiencing problems with my quad. Earlier in november i had injured it playing football while i was kicking, now i have done the same thing. I went to strike a ball and an excruciating pain shot thru my leg and a loud popping noise could be heard. I've been going for thearaputic massages and having ultra sound done but nothing has worked the pain just keeps gettin worse. Just the other day my massage therapist found a large lump and said i might have torn my quad. Should i seek further medical attention and what will be done if its torn?

Once you've had a quad strain, or worse, a tear, you are obliged to stretch for ever more if you want to be pain free and play sport. Like many in here before me, I returned to sport after a lapse (AFL) and the the strain I put on my right quad from the first training was bearable but the next training - first kick - bang - excrusiating pain. Nothing new here! What was occurring thereafter was bleeding - a mass developed. A great physio explained to me that after the bleeding has had time to stop (and only after constant icing of the tear site for 15-20 minutes every hour or two over 48 hours) he had to break up the "mass" with what I can only describe as forcefully pushing thumbs deep through the mass - this was more painful than the injury itself (again the physio said that often the repair work had to be equal to or more painful than the injury - so pay the price). Continued icing there after and repeated stretching every hour

He amazed me, I was playing within the week (at about 80%) even KICKING but with a compression bandage on and I can't tell you the amount of stretching I did - and now keep doing.

ONGOING - ALWAYS heat up the quad first - and stretch a minimum of 5 x 10 second repetitions (hand on wall and gently pull leg back so that heel is touching buttocks - preferably yours - oh and make sure your posture is erect - don't find ways to cheat). Do some 20m run throughs starting slowly, building up speed - do at least 10. Do another series of stretches as above and only then start gently kicking the ball short distances and building up - periodically stopping to do one 10sec stretch each leg.

The first twelve months after initial tear - always ice down after exercise and a good heated massage on the area the next day is helpful - but only if no severe pain has been experienced. If severe pain is experienced rest and start the cycle again.

I'm only an avid sports person - but this has helped me stay on the track to age 45. Hope it helps some of you.............. :)

Hi all...im new to this so ignore me if i start talkin shit! Basically, im a massive sports guy....im only 17 and play mainly football. A couple weeks ago whilst playing football i changed pace running and felt a *snap* in my upper right quad. hmmm....Didnt feel tooo good as you can imagine, but the pain was bearable for about 5 mins til i hadto be carried off the pitch haha!
Neway...i gave my leg a couple weeks rest and it felt fine...infact i had forgotton i'd even injured it! So i played football the other day and i warmed up etc stretched.......NOT thinkin about my quad at all...cuase there was no pain or signs of pain at all.....as soon as that football touched my foot. f**King H*ll!!! the pain was twice as bad as i could remember. not only was i massively annoyed about not being able to play the game but the fact it didnt hurt until i kicked the ball puzzled me!! and still puzzles me now.

Im confused as to what i've done? Im thinkin some sort of small tear or something cus i've had a dead leg and strain before and this isnt like that at all...it only hurts when i make that kicking motion or try and get up to top sprinting speed. Very annoying injury!!
Ne ideas on rehab? Or what i might have done? Should i get a mri scan?

hi I have a similar story as those above and I'm not sure as to what I should do. I'm almost seventeen and I've been playing soccer for 10 or 11 years. two days ago I was at soccer and I did a drawback move and immediately felt a pulling motion in my upper right quad. I had to sit out the rest of the scrimmage because it hurt to run and especially to kick the ball. I played again yesterday, which I was advised by both my coach and parents not to. it really really hurt, and could only use my weaker foot. our first game is next Wednesday, and we have practice every day, except Sunday, until then. what should I do?
