I just tore my bicep tendon off of the bone two weeks ago. I am a bodybuilder and the funny thing is I injured myself picking up a child that weighs less than what I curl with one hand. I had to have surgery and I am being told the same, 4-6 months recovery time. Also, I have been advised numerous times not to do anything or reconstructive surgery would put me out for at least a year. Tell your mate to be patient and try to focus his energy away from the injured arm.

I also had a complete rupture of a distal bicep tendon. An evulsion from the distal attachment at radial tuberosity to be more accurate. I had an MRI confirming the complete detachment the following morning and surgery with in a few day. I was in three different range limiting hard casts for a total of just over 6 weeks. I have been instructed NOT to do ANY resistance exercisers (i.e. weight lifting, pull ups, etc) for at least 4 to 6 months. I am very happy with the repair the surgeon did. I have had no residual nerve damage and have already regained full range of motion on flexion, extension, pronation and supination. I feel very fortunate thus far. However, I have had some residual pain and tightness in my hand and wrist from having been tightly fixated in casted for nearly 2 months. It is slowly improving, but since I am not allowed to do any real rehab (other than rest and restricted use) at this point the progress is slow.

Everything I have been told and have read stresses NOT trying to do TOO MUCH TOO SOON. Doing so could seriously affect how full or complete final recovery is. I am as hard headed as anyone when it comes to trying to keep my self down. But I know, even as much as a year to get back 100% is a small price to pay for the rest of my life with unimpaired performance of my arm. Please heed the advice of your surgeon and take proper precautions and care of you arm post surgery. You will much happier in the long run. I am now 3 months out and am very much looking forward to cranking it up in another 3 months.

I myself have experienced a torn left bicep. It happened about six years ago while I was racing. I was going into turn two of Daytona International Speedway during my victory lap at two hundred miles per hour when my car hit the apron and sailed right into the wall. Needless to say, I had to have surgery to reattach the bicep to the bone, and I had a six month recovery period. (Don't worry, I didn't miss any races, as that one was the last of the season) Ever since, my arm has not been as strong as it used to be, but that's to be expected. But it feels great!
