Hi my name is Dominic i'm 30 years old and I broke both my ankles (riding motocross) a little over a year ago.To be specific I broke my right talus in two pieces and the left talus in three pieces. They put two screws in each talus to repair them. The right anlkle seemed to heal better but they both are constantly hurting.I still ride and fish but everytime it takes one to two days before i can walk without severe pain and a cane.I go to a naturalist doctor and he will not proscribe anything for pain only supplements that I take all the time.I also work out . I can not tell if my ankles are gettin better or i'm getting used to the pain. The foot doctors said the same thing about having to fuse them. With both fused would I have normal walking and would I still be able to ride motocross and jump?If I leave it the way it is will they get any worse? Also one of my friends had a fake talus put in his ankle but none of the doctors seem to want to give me any options.I'm to young to give up physical activity and I think we all deserve to have a normal life.I can't believe we can clone someone but we have limited capabilitys on ankle surgerys. Can anyone give me any advise ?

Hi, i am sorry to hear of your injury but thumbs up to not accepting defeat. I had a serious car accident on the 12/01/06 with a John Deer Tractor. The road was very wet and muddy and my car aqua plained across the road hitting the tractor head on. The consequence of this accident left me with a fractured nose, broken sternum and broken ankle and foot. I had screws inserted via the back of my ankle into the talus to try and hold the ankle and foot together. I underwent a 2 hour operation under epidural as i could not have the conventional general anthestic due to my chest injury. I did not feel a thing just heard the occasional drilling and chizeling, so better to be awake and the recovery is quick after the operation. I was casted for 10 weeks and have had the cast off now for about 3 weeks. I decided to take the bull by the horns and obtain private physio about £40.00 english pounds for 1 hour session, i go twice a week. I had my 4th treatment yesterday. so far the physio has been a little painful, but not on the break but more in the calf as my muscle had wasted away and i was left with just a bone that really did not resemble a leg. The pysio worked very hard to open the muscle receptors and now i can see muscle definition and i can actually lift my whole leg in the air without having to lift it by holding my leg with my hands. I have started to get movement back into my ankle and have a range of exercises that i do with the physio and at home. The best one that i do at home is to sit down on a dining chair with a black refuse shining bag on the floor held in place by my uninjured foot and my injured foot is placed flat on the floor wearing a sock and another sock folded under the heal and then i slide the foot backwards and forwards this helps with the wooden feeling i have in my ankle and with helping to soften the ankle and strengthen the muscles in the calf. There is a regime i follow each day and i take calcium tablets with vitamin D in my breakfast to help with the calcification of the bones. I will be perfectly honest with you, i had lost all my confidence after the accident and did not see any relatives or friends for about 3 months. After 4 physio treatments i have started to regain my confidence and i am partial weight bearing by using a zimmer frame and it feels great. I actually went out today in the car to visit my mum and enjoyed my first Big Mac in 4 months via the drive through. So life is good and can only get better. Sorry that i have chatted on a bit but it has been so hard trying to get advice myself and trying the internet for help as well. Nobody can ever understand what it is like unless they have suffered an injury that is so debilitating so its nice to know that there are people out there who want to find a way through the fog and get on with their lives. If you would like to know what exercises i do at physio then let me know otherwise i will be chatting away non stop. By the way do you watch the sopranos?

Dominic

I broke my ankle over two years ago. I decided to have an ankle fusion because of severe pain in my ankle. My ankle fused but the pain is still severe. Arthritis has formed in my ankle and foot. The doctor said there is nothing else surgically that can be done to help the pain. I take pain medication every day.

After talking to others that have gone through ankle fusion surgery, generally the pain in the ankle is minimal. I would recommend the ankle fusion surgery for both of your ankles. Make sure you find an experienced doctor to do the surgery. Take care.

i'm not sure a person of 30 years should be fusing their ankles. this will greatly affect your ROM in the ankle and you will be left walking as if you are in snow shoes all the time. as for jumping with your motorbike i am unsure.

I am 30 years old and suffer from a talus fracture. It has been a year since my life changed due to an auto accident. I admire your spirits in the face of this adversity, however, the injury we have is very serious, and as most medical journals indicate devastating. I have not accepted defeat, nor have I kidded myself thinking I will be normal again one day. Rather, I have begun to play the cards that were dealt to me. Which means I have have given up certain things to air on the side of better judgement. I wish you all the best. Travis, Atlanta Georgia. Travis_Greene@homedepot.com

For all those whos still suffer from pain after the accident, did u undergo physio after the accident?... it maybe that ur ankle has not been strengthened properly. Because the Talus is the weight bearing bone in ur ankle it is important that u had done proper weight bearing exercises during the healing process and that u strengthen all the mucles and ligaments surrounding it.

Wow, I didn't think I was in for this much trouble. I dislocated my ankle playing Ultimate Frisbee, of all things. I guess I broke two of the three bones (not sure which one I didn't break). When I got to the hospital I fanally saw what I had done to myself, my right foot was at a 90 degree angle to my leg, pointing inwards. It was at that point that the morphine stopped working. I did all of this on the 22 of June, had surgery on the 30th of June, and I will be going to see my doctor on the 10th of July. Now that I found this website, I will be better armed to talk with him. I was told that I have at least 6 weeks of no weight on that foot, who know how long with the cast.....
