As an NRMA member, just received my monthly magazine Open Road.

They say regrettably the road toll is slightly up, and reiterate the factors that have been shown to be associated with increased deaths. There is something we can learn about this approach in sports medicine research:

(1) Driver complacency - it won't happen to me attitude, lack of seat belt use.
(2) Driver distraction - in the days of SMS possibly getting worse than previously
(3) Fatigue
(4) Alcohol/drug use 0.08 BAC = 7 times the risk of crash
(5) Speeding
(6) Country driving - country people twice as likely as city to be killed.
(7) P-platers - 16% of licences 26% of deaths
(8) Lack of dual carriageway roads - esp Pacific Hwy
(9) Lack of car safety features
(10) Motorcycles

I would add trend towards 4WD SUV huge cars that are very aggressive, which has been encouraged by Howard gvmt.

Wish we had better stats/resources in sport to get our own list like this.
