It may be a bit of a cliche, but football does seem to be a bit of a heart-stopper, due to the tension involved. At last Friday's Knights-Roosters match, a Newcastle supporter died of a massive heart attack during the first division match, despite attempts to revive him with CPR and defribillation. Apparently at Aussie Stadium there have been 5 arrests in the last 2 years with only one successful resuscitation. Given the stadium has a defibrillator, these have been pretty bad arrests. On Sunday, Cowboys doctor Greg Winter skipped into a heart arrythmia and needed transport to hospital and will now need a pacemaker. In recent times, Peter Frilingos died of a heart attack at his news desk whilst on the phone to David Gallop, and Chris Anderson had a heart attack on the Kangaroo Tour in 2002. ARL boss Geoff Carr has recently been in for a heart procedure.
I suppose anyone who dies of a heart attack at the footy is just about leaving this world at their place of worship. For those mentioned above who are still with us, we wish you well and hope for no recurrences during golden-point extra-time periods.
