I'm fairly sure this is a muscular problem. I went on an extremely long and intense hike yesterday, all up about 5 hours/25km, significant sections of it being steep grade and rough track.
In the last hour a pain developed at the back and just below my left knee whenever I walked up a slope. It was getting progressively worse, which made me think it was muscular in nature.
I iced and rested it on returning home. I can stand without pain, but if I lie down and fully extend my knee and flex my foot the pain can be felt. It really feels like it's at the very top of the calf muscle where it fixes itself near the knee.
If it is just a muscle strain I know how to treat it, but just making sure there's no risk of a structural injury in the knee itself that could be contributing to it?
BTW: there's no visible bruising or discolouration near the point of pain. There's no pain on touch/prodding it, and in fact some light massage relieves the pain on dorsiflexion. No obvious swelling.
