Is it a true story that after the Origin match when Devere got stapled up on the field that the NSW team Doc gave himself a couple self inflicted staples in front of the team after 20 or so beers later that night?

Ha ha, nice story Terry. Maybe one for injuryupdate to answer...?

Almost true. The stapling of DeVere was in game 1 of 2003 whilst the incident described took place at Forster in camp 3 of the same year. The number of beers described is a little closer to being accurate.

I heard a similar story, albeit slightly different and more factual:
* Stapling of DeVere game 1
* Bender up at Forster prior to game 3
* Difference was that it wasn't 20 or so beers but 6 shandies (drunk through a straw).
None the less - a brilliant effort. Sorry to disclose this information but it comes from a reliable source in the wake of the trend towards evidence based medicine.

I have to stick up for injury update here, the story is legit. I guess the moral of the story is don't try to out drink footy players twice the size of you..or maybe it's don't carry a staple gun around with you when smashed?

Nothing wrong with stapling when smashed. In fact the staples during the pub incident were in a straighter line than the ones on Devere's head. When you have had a few drinks to relax the pain isn't as great and you don't tend to move during the procedure.

It doesn't look like there will be a repeat of the on field stapling, not because of the rule changes (if clubs don't want to lose an interchange in a critical game they would be prepared to cop a $5000 fine for stapling) but because it appears that referees don't police the blood rule any more. In Origin 2, Lockyer played the entire first half with blood streaming down his face and Hempstead didn't worry about it.
