View Full Version : Arthroscope Surgery info
Could anyone give me their experience with Shoulder Arthroscope procedures. Have been booked in to get operation to relieve shoulder impingement and small tear in suprasprinatus. Also have wear in ac joint.
Wondering if anyone has any info on what to expect from the operation, hospital stay, pain, time in sling and recovery advice.
Appreciate any help.
Cheers

Hi,
Check out the website listed below - I'm not a medico but it seems to have some particularly useful patient info.

DLN,
Mate, have a look at my post(s) further down the list here under'' How Much Now?' My experience with arthroscopic surgery plus some others are documented. Sounds to me you need surgery.

HI
JUST HAD AN OP ON 24/8/06 @ BUPA HAVANT. FOR CALCIFIC TENDONITIS AND BONE REDUCTION OF THE ACROMION (THE BONE ABOVE THE HUMEROUS) CALLED - Arthroscopic Subacromial Decompression Surgery.... bone-shaving device was used to shape the underside of the acromion VIA KEY HOLE SURGERY.
NOW 4 DAYS AGO... HAVE BEEN DOING 15 DIFFERENT EXERCISES DAILY (MAYBE 15+ TIMES A DAY). I HAVE STOPPED TAKING THE PAIN KILLERS/SWELLING/ANTI-INFLAMATORY SUPPLIED...
DICLOFENAC SODIUM + DIHYDROCODEINE TARTRATE + PARACETAMOL - MADE ME SICK AND INDIGESTION EXCESS GAS PAINS !! NOW BACK TO IBUPROFEN 400MG WITH FOOD X3 DAY - ALL WELL AGAIN.
I HAVE NOT TRIED TO DRIVE - NO WAY I COULD YET - I GUESS 9-10 DAYS MAYBE POSSIBLE , BUT NOT AFTER 1 WEEK ! AS ADVISED.
THANKS
CARL
I WOULD ADVISE TO HAVE OP - I HAVE HOPE NOW AND NO PAIN.
OP TOOK 1 HR. WAITED 6HRS AFTER CHECK TO GO DOWN - 6TH ON THE LIST. NURSES CLEARLY TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENS NEXT AND PUTS YOU AT EASE. SURGEON SEES YOU BEFORE OP AND AFTER NEXT DAY.
Thankyou for advice. Have been told by different people too look at different shoulder stabilizing braces to wear for short time afterward. I think they were like the thermoskin ones. Any thoughts??

hay there, i had shoulder surgery last year, arthroscopic decompession, to remove a bone spur from my accromion, which was damaging the surpaspinatus, I had a nerve block, so really didnt feel anything for about 16 hours after the surgery, I was in a sling for about a week, i did PT that the pyhsio gave me in the hospital, which really helped then PT for about four weeks after, it was painful, but nothing horrendous, i found that a ice pack helped and doing the physio. My shoulder doesnt have the ROM it had before the surgery, but it doesnt hurt to move. good luck with your surgery. Emma
Thanks Emmae
What sort of time period did you have in getting back to exercise? Have not been able to get to gym for 4 months now!!!! Not good at all. dln

That sounds like an extremely long time to be out of the gym !
Initially I was told by my shoulder surgeon that I couldn't go to the gym for 3 months after my shoulder operation. When my sports physicians found out they hit the roof and said no way. I've got loose ligaments so it's really important for me to get going soon after.
After talking to my shoulder surgeon and sports physicians we've agreed that I can start back in the gym after 2 weeks just doing leg work. Just because you have a shoulder operation doesn't mean you are unable to use your legs. When I told my knee surgeon what my shoulder surgeon said he couldn't fathom it. He wasn't very happy because I had a knee operation at the end of July and it's important to keep my knee going.
If I was you I'd get your physio or sports physician (if you have one) to speak with your surgeon. Seems unrealistic to expect you to be out of the gym for that long if it was just for an arthroscrope. I'm having an open stabilisation procedure so am not supposed to do weights for at least 3 months afterwards.
Good luck ! Let us know how you go.
Kjwilkin,
Thanks for your advice. I actually havent had the operation yet (tuesday 5/9 with Dr Perko). The last 4 months past was time out of gym . Part to do with pain and part was my original ortho pods advice before he would look at operating. I'm sure we all agree there is only so much walking a person can do. Thank the Apple gods for the invention called Ipod!!!!
Has anyone had any experience with or heard any reports about Dr Perko. Was referred to him by friend and apart from coming out of consult feeling extremely confident in him I have only heard excellent reports of his work(which is good when someone is going to cut you open!!!).
Cheers
