The scenario in the Rio Ferdinand case is allegedly that he was told at a Manchester United training session that he must take a drug test after training, but he left without taking it. The drug testing procedure is rightly being criticised as too lax, because in most sports a player would have a chaperone as soon as he/she was selected for a test. However, Ferdinand must bear some responsibility for forgetting or avoiding the test. He passed a second test within 48 hours, but some drugs can have passed through the system by then.
