Depends on the size of the fragment, but in general you are a good chance to return to these sports. Normally OCD affects one small piece of the joint, and although it is a full thickness degeneration, the rest of the joint is usually normal. There have been professional football players who have had this and gone on to have a normal career.

Is the rehabilitation post surgical? Where abouts is the OCD (I assume the medial margin of the lateral femoral condyle)

Is surgery only recommended if the OCD forms a loose body, causes giving way or joint locking?

Hi

yes my rehabilitation is post surgical, i had the operation on Jan 15 this year had a brace on my knee with crutches for 4 months. the size of the fragment is about the size of a 20cent piece. i returned to the physio yesterday (26th july) and he told me in 6 weeks time i will be running.
can you please give me names of the pro football players that have had this condition if possible!!

The doctor that performed the surgery (Dr Tony Spriggins SportsMed SA) said that i had two options. have the surgery and have a good chance of having a normal knee later in life or leaving the defect as is and have arthritis very early in life.

I'm sure Stephen Doyle (of the Swans) had this procedure. I think he missed almost a full year but is now back playing. If the piece was 20 cent size then it is not great for the future.

hi,

8 months has passed since the surgery on my knee and after lots of exercises and visits to the physio and specialist i have started running on my knee. it feels fine, only very minor pain. the physio has me running around the footy oval running a quarter walking a quarter. he has also informed me that i am a good chance to be playing some cricket this season, just wont be bowling.

i have a grinding sound coming from under my patella, the last visit to the specialist he said that he didnt like it and that it is highly likely that the patch has oer grown on the surface. he said that this will require another arthroscopy to make the joint surface even. he said he will reassess it in december.

so there it is just thought i'd let you all know on my recovery.
