Broncos centre and ace goalkicker Michael De Vere has probably reached a sad end to his NRL career after suffering an ACL injury at a Broncos training session. De Vere was returning from a quadriceps strain and changed direction in a standard movement, when his knee gave way. The mechanism is actually not unusual, but it is rare for players to suffer training ACL injuries in July. In fact ACL injuries in general are far more common at the start of the year. Teams who make the finals often have close to a full compliment of players available because serious late season injuries are less common, whereas they often use local anaesthetic to keep players on the field with minor late season injuries. Therefore, the unexpected De Vere injury seriously affects the NRL Premiership market, particularly as he is the Broncos no. 1 goalkicker. De Vere will be playing in England for the next two seasons, and is also well known for many distinctive factors, including selling his own patented kicking tee, changing his surname from 'Hunt' early in his career to avoid obvious embarrassment, and having his head stapled during the Origin 2003 series.
