Qantas Wallabies flanker Daniel Heenan will miss the remainder of the 2006 Test season after further scans on his injured shoulder revealed that the 24-year-old requires reconstructive surgery.

Heenan aggravated a left shoulder injury during Australia's opening Bundaberg Rum Rugby Series Test against England at Telstra Stadium.

The match was his first Test appearance for the Qantas Wallabies since 2003.

The Brumbies flanker continued to travel with the team to Melbourne and Perth in an effort to regain fitness on the shoulder, before returning to Brisbane for further scans earlier this week.

Heenan will have surgery on the shoulder in Brisbane next Thursday (13 July) and will be out of rugby for six months.

“Daniel had a reconstruction on the same shoulder in 2004 and that reconstruction has broken down,” said Wallaby team doctor Warren McDonald.

“He will have surgery in Brisbane next Thursday but can expect to be back into a modified training program in late August or early September,” said McDonald.

“If all goes well with his rehabilitation, Daniel will be back into full training by December, in time for the Super 14 pre-season.”

Qantas Wallabies Coach John Connolly sympathised with his rejuvenated flanker.

“It's a shame because Daniel had had such a strong season for the Brumbies and had done some great work to get back into the Test team,” said Connolly.

“It's very unlucky, he's had a hard run with injuries but he's a fine player and I'm sure that he'll bounce back strongly during next year's Super 14 on the road to the World Cup.”
