Billy Slater isn't on the injury list because apparently he is not in any doubt for the remaining games for the Storm. However, after the Storm's loss to the Dragons, coach Craig Bellamy admitted that Billy needed groin surgery and was waiting for the end of the season for this, and would therefore miss the Kangaroo tour.

I didn't see the game on Friday night football, but at the Storm-Roosters game a week before, Billy Slater was almost a liability for the Storm as he refused to take the ball to the line, being obsessed with passing it to Matt Geyer whenever he received the ball on a kick return. Given he has scored tries from kick returns this year and on a good day is much more likely to evade tackles that Geyer, this seemed a strange tactic. I can only guess that he is also carrying another injury (like a rib cartilage) that is getting needled up but he is afraid of getting crunched in a tackle. I would be surprised if he was avoiding contact from a groin problem.

It is a pity that the Storm need to desperately win their next few games to have a good assault on the Premiership. If the Storm were in the top 3 currently, I'm sure Slater would have a few weeks off before the finals and then hopefully come back in the devastating form he was in during the Origin series.

On the other hand, if he is carrying a rib injury or something similar, he is lucky he plays in Melbourne as the media are much less likely to smoke out the injury details if he is trying to keep it quiet.

"MRI confirms osteitis pubis"

Storm injury woes continue
August 9, 2004

SCANS today confirmed Melbourne fullback Billy Slater was suffering from a persistent groin injury but the Queenslander has been cleared to finish the NRL season.

Slater was forced from the field in the second half of the Storm's 20-point loss to the Dragons at WIN Stadium on Friday night.

An MRI scan confirmed the 21-year-old was suffering from osteitis pubis - a debilitating injury he has been carrying for 18 months.

However, post-season surgery is not necessarily required.

"The scans basically confirmed the diagnosis that Billy is suffering from osteitis pubis, something we have known for sometime," Storm doctor Michael Makdissi said.

"Ultimately he needs rest but this is obviously very difficult at this stage of the season.

"End of season surgery is something we will certainly explore but it's not definite at this stage, we really want to have a look at all the options available to get Billy right."

Makdissi believed Slater would benefit from the Storm's longer break this week ahead of Sunday's clash with the Raiders in Canberra.

"Rest will certainly help and a longer turnaround this week will be beneficial as well," Makdissi said.

"The key is for him to continue his rehabilitation program and the management of this injury, as he has been doing for some time."

The concern over Slater's groin injury couldn't come at a worse time for the club.

The Storm, under pressure to hold their spot in the top eight, have a handful of players sidelined through injury and suspension.

Melbourne is without forwards Alex Chan (suspension), Danny Williams (suspension), Kirk Reynoldson (calf injury), Peter Robinson (knee injury) and Antonio Kaufusi (knee).

The Storm also lost five-eighth Scott Hill to a lower back strain last week while Steve Turner (knee) and Nathan Friend (ankle) are sidelined through injury.

Hill will be tested this week as the Storm aims to snap a two-game losing streak when it meets the tenth-placed Canberra at Canberra Stadium.
