Hi All,
About a month and a half ago I received MRI results on my right hip and I was told I had a "femoral acetabular impingement syndrome with labral tear". At the time I was a little shocked and declined my sports doctors option to meet with a surgeon (mainly because I was scared surgery wouldn't be an option). On October 16th, I have another appointment with her again and will ask to meet with a surgeon to discuss my options. Just wondering if anyone could explain the combo of the impingement and labral tear, most postings I've read are straight labral tears or impingements.

Here's a little info on me. I am 30 years old and live in Ottawa, Canada. I have been doing Jiu-Jitsu for 21 years, which I suspect is the cause or partial cause anyway. My pain tolerance is high so I can tolerate the pain most days without complaining, but I've had about 5 occurrences that my leg has gave away completely due to such a sharp pain. When this happens I grab a wall or furniture to keep me up. I get the use back within a few seconds, but it scares me allot when it happens. Seems I match the average as it took about two years to get diagnosed. No MRI done on the left hip, but I believe it has similar problems on a smaller scale.

Any help would be great.

Cheers,
Barrie

Hiya Barrie

You might want to search Femoroacetabular Impingement on google because you may be surprised to find that it is very common to have both FAI and a labral tear, infact there are studies saying that labral tears are caused by an underlying condition eg, FAI.

I have recently be diagnosed with the same conditions and am waiting for open surgical dislocation to fix the problems so there is the option of surgery to deal with it. I know what you mean about the giving way, and the pain although now after almost 3 years I am finding it much harder to deal with the pain on a day to day basis. And I'm only 21.

Another good place to tap into is on yahoo.com, there is a message group called femoroacetabular impingement, many people who have this condition support each other and provide really good information too. I find it really helpful.

Hope you find it helpful too.

Have a look at the acetabular labral tears section of injury update. I have just found these other lists. Seem we all post in different places!

I am 35 years old and I'm about to make a surgical appointment with Dr. Phillipon in Vail for arthroscopy - I am still in the paperwork and questions phase but I believe since it's the Cam type impingement he should be able to repair the tear while addressing the impingement arthroscopically. I have been told by multiple sources that "he's the best" (which is making it worth the travel) and am trying to avoid any sort of open procedure at this point so this appears to be the ideal option. Has anyone been able to hear their labral tear repaired during the FAI arthroscopy? I should be in touch with his office again early next week so I may have the answers then. At this point he has reviewed my films and indicated I am a good candidate for arthroscopy but this was via report only.

Barrie and Happygirl,
I was diagnosed with a impingement and tear as well. I am going to get it surgically repaired but arthroscopically. There is a Doctor Jason Koh and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago tha has a developed an arthroscopic technique to repair it that is much less invasive as the surgery your going to go through Happygirl. feel free to email me at chef104@aol.com with more questions
