Hey guys
First I want to thank everyone in this forum for putting together sucha great site. I was recently diagnosed with hip problems as well and was blessed enough to find this great site.

I am a 21 yo female from Canada. Up until the beginning of the year I worked full time as a paramedic. I have had problems with my hips for about 2 and a half - 3 years now. I have felt a lot of pain right into my groin on both sides. Feels like a catching sensation. It has gotten worst and worst with time. It hurts main I kneel down specifically when I do it while twisting down. Sitting cross legged, sitting for extended periods of time, getting in and out of my car/ambulance. Basically whenever my hip comes out of a straight alignment.

I was sent for x-rays and hip arthrograms. I saw a surgeon who told me I had dysplasia in my hips. He said he wanted to try conservatice treatments before looking at surgery. Tried physiotherapy for 5 months to no success. I saw him last week and have now been scheduled for 2 arthroscopiesm one for each hip.

He did mention to me there was a chance I would have recurrent tears due to the dysplasia. Has anyone had that problem and required the hip rebuilding operation where the sockets are rebuild deeper? How quickly after the arthroscopies did you realise that they hadnt been successful?

Thank you so much

Look at the acetabular labral tears site on injury update for loads of examples of others with similar problems - very good site.

Focus 911,
I found out today that I have hip dysplasia and a labral tear. What type of treatment did you follow? I would like any advice. I am going to have the scope surgery to repair the tear. Will that stop the hip dislocating? I have to wait for a few months for surgery. I am going to go nuts waiting the pain is unbearable most days. Thank you for you time.
Robin

Take a look at the labral tear forum, also have a very lenghty thread on what I have gone thru and what I have done so far.

Good Luck.

Hey focus_911
Just a quick question - I've got my PAO next week and I'm more worried about how my other hip is going to take the strain whilst I'm recovering - it's not doing to well at the moment let alone taking more pressure post op (fell down the stairs yesterday as my left hip dislocated, tried to save myself with my right but that did exactly the same - hurting my achilles in the process) - so how did your other hip hold up whilst you were recovering from your PAO? Is it just a matter of taking each day as it comes?
Thanks,
Jodie

Hi Jodie,
I had the exact same concern going into the surgery. As a matter of fact that hip that was going to take the strain has been the worst side of the 2.

As it happened to be I never had problems. As you get the surgery under way and you recover, your level of activity is going to be non-existent due to the fact you cant take the risk and chance of falling or injuring and wrecking the done work on the operated hip.

Because your level of activity is going to go down so much, you really wont run into the problem of hurting yourself with the already existing issues.

The big problems will be once the doc gives you the go ahead to start walking on that leg and life comes back to "normal". Thats when you will run into issues as that hip is now going to be doing a lot of work.

You will do just fine. Once you get passed the first week after surgery, you will be surprised at how little pain you actually have.

coughing and sitting up will be hard and lying on that side that it getting done wont happen at all for at least 6 weeks or so.

take it easy, and stay positive, remember you've just had major surgery and need to allow yourself to get pampered. Grab lots of movies and a good book or 2.

Let me know if you any other questions. I have messenger (yahoo, msn, aim and iChat) if you want to chat that way,
Cheers
