10/08/04: Fone Zone Canberra Raiders prop Luke Davico has had his worst fears confirmed today, with results from an MRI scan revealing a complete tear of his left pectoral muscle.

Davico, an eleven-year first grade veteran for the Raiders, will undergo surgery tomorrow, signalling the end of his illustrious 176-game career in the famous lime green jersey.

Davico left the field during the second-half of the Raiders 20-14 loss to Newcastle at Energy Australia Stadium on Saturday night, and now faces a gruelling 3 months of rehabilitation to ensure he is fit to start the English Super League season with his new Club Wigan.

“Straight away I knew it was bad and just got this sick feeling that this might be it (the last game I’d play for the Raiders),” said an emotional Davico.

The injury is the second of its nature that Davico has suffered in his career, having torn his right pectoral muscle in 2002 in a match against Cronulla at Canberra Stadium.

The tough prop missed almost the entire 2002 season with the injury, and now faces a similar fate, having to watch the remaining games of the Raiders 2004 campaign from the sidelines.

“This being my last season (with the Raiders), it’s certainly not the way I wanted to go out,” said Davico.

“I’ve tried to look at as many positives as I can and the fact that I’ve played the game at the highest level for such a long time, injuries are going to happen and its just rotten timing,” he said.

“I’ve been very lucky… I mean I never dreamt I’d play one first grade game let alone 170 so

I can look back on my time with the Raiders and be very proud.”

“Its’ very disappointing not to get the opportunity to go out the way I wanted to (on the field).”

“Its going to be hard to leave this Club and to not get the chance to play with my best mates again, but I need to accept that that is footy and that’s life.”

Troy Thompson has been named as Davico’s front-row replacement for this Sunday’s must-win showdown with the Melbourne Storm.

In other team news, Captain Simon Woolford was unable to train with the team today and is in doubt for the clash with a groin strain.

Utility Brad Drew has been placed on stand-by for Woolford, and was named on a five-man

Interchange bench alongside Michael Robertson, who returns to the line-up after missing last weeks’ match with a hamstring injury.
