Hi everyone,
Since I can't ask a anyone right now I thought I would post my aggrieved thoughts and questions.
Basically my hip/groin started hurting at work today. I do a lot of walking around on hard concrete floors wearing heavy boots. Maybe about an hour or two after I started walking around it started hurting. It’s a bit hart to identify exactly where it hurts but it’s right at the crease between leg and torso but further inside towards the joint and towards the inside, rather than outside of my body. I am only 20 so it shouldn’t (hopefully) be anything to do with age.

When it hurts - while walking it hurts just at the backstroke of my stride, as the leg straightens out behind me. Didn't do anything severe to ingure it as far as I know, it was just there.
When I got home I tried to see exactly what movements set it off. It’s hurts to do leg raises and pretty much any movement bringing the leg towards the body. When standing other movement that hurt are, bringing the leg forwards (front kick like), lifting leg to the side and if standing on two legs, it hurts to push the hips forwards. Pain is as if I am bending the joint the wrong way and I expect it to crack or pop, but with no cracks or pops.

Strangely enough, it doesn’t hurt if I pull my leg towards me with my arms while also letting my arms take all the weight. So I figure it must some sort of muscle problem rather than bone/joint related, am I right in this?

So, any ideas as to what on Earth I have done to myself. I also have to go to work again tomorrow, anything else I can try to make it a bit better. Possibly wearing sneakers instead of boots perhaps?
Thanks for reading.

Hi there,

Rather than guessing what it might be I suggest you go and seek some professional help. It could be a number of different things.

A good sports physician is a good starting point. They can then refer you onto the appropriate people. If you're in Melbourne Olympic Park Sports Medicine is a great place to start. Andrew Jowett, Chris Bradshaw and Paul Blackman are all great sports physicians. The contact number for Olympic Park is 9427 0366.

I've had problems with my hip and found that pilates has been really good in strengthening the muscles around my hip. It's an overall body workout which I find has helped helps. The place I go to in Melbourne specialises in pilates and exercise rehabilitation. The pilates sessions are in a group, often run my physios. Both the instructors I have are both physios, which makes a huge difference. I suffer from hypermobility syndrome, so is really important that I have physios that understand the problem.

Good luck and let us know how you go !:)

Sigh, I always hope for a quick fix answer. No harm in hoping though. Just annoying because it wasn't sudden. Yoga sounds good, although I am not sure about some of the strange expression I have seen on some people doing it.

The internet is great.

Hi there,

If I was you I'd give pilates a go. It's definitely worth a try.

Getting an accurate diagnosis from sports physician would be good too.

Good luck and let us know how you go !

Damnable,
It does sound a bit like a muscle problem (iliopsoas probably) but as kjwilkin suggested, you should get it checked out. You need to find out why it hurts and not just tend to the symptoms. There are a lot of potential causes, some of which can be nasty. It just so happens that last week in my practise I uncovered a benign growth in an 18 y.o. guy who was as fit as a fiddle. Don't delay
