hi
im 19 and a very active person. for the past 2-3 years, my rotational movement of the hip and my side to side movement of the hip is slowly reducing. it hurts on both my hips now and iv visited 3 doctors and all they have told me is stop playing soccer or that you have stiff hips and live with it. i find that insulting because i know theres something wrong considering its BOTH hips having the same pain. i cant sit in the cross legged yoga position because it requires rotating my hips a little. my flexibility of movement is farely good if i have to stretch my hips back or foreward but going side to side is quiet painfull. when i was young i had a hip problem and couldnt walk but i was put on traction and weights and that made it better. can any1 tell me what it could be.

my main problem is trying to do the splits movement going side to side. the pain comes in the joint and focuses on the outer region of my hips.

Hi there,
I can understand how frustrated you must be. Personally I don't think it's a solution to stop playing soccer. One of the hard things is finding the right people to treat you. I have loose ligaments and have had quite a lot of joint instability. About 5 years ago I started seeing a sports physician which has made all the difference.
A lot of GPs don't understand joint problems very well. I'd highly recommend that you go to see a sports physician that is connected to an elite sporting team. Whereabouts are you based ? I know of some good sports medicine clinics in Melbourne, London and Canberra who have some good sports physicians and physios.
About 3 years ago I started doing pilates at the recommendation of my sports physician. It has made the world of difference to me. I had a problem with my hips and has really helped me. I've built up the muscles around my hips and have much less pain now.
Good luck and let us know how you go !

Hi,
kjwilkin is very right in saying many GP's aren't very strong in the musculoskeletal areas. Do you do much streching of ALL lower limb muscle groups before AND after exercise? If you've had a prob in the past you need to look after yourself moreso than everyone else to maintain your playing life. If you had traction etc when young you may have had SCFE or Perthes disease. This, I have found clinically affects most people in the cross legged position (called external rotation). You need to find out EXACTLY what happened in the past and if it was SCFE/Perthes then an XR will show the shape of the joint. In this particular condition, the growth plate slips and therefore changes the shape of the ball joint that goes in the socket, hence affecting movement. Do see a professional Chiro, Physio, Osteo, Sports Physician and let us know how you go.
