I had an operation exactly 3 years ago to remove the Os Trigonum at the back of my ankle (thought to have grown due to being a fast bowler). Since then, i have recovered pretty much fully (with the occasional pain - but very much bearable). However, these last couple of weeks the pain has returned at the back of the ankle - almost identical to how it felt pre-op. Could a new bone growth have developed in this time? Is a course of anti-inflam / physio / rest the best course of action or will manipulating the area just flare it all up again? I already wear custom fitted orthotics, but are there any other things out there that may help? I'd appreciate it if anybody has any advice. Many thanks. James

Yes, the bone can re-form after a period of time, although it shouldn't be as big as the original. You can easily see whether it has grown back by having an X-ray. If it hasn't or if there is a tiny bit of re-growth then a cortisone injection may be enough to fix the problem rather than more surgery. However, sometimes a second operation is needed (Brett Lee needed to have this done a second time earlier this year).

Perhaps you could have a look at your bowling action as well as this may be predisposing you to this injury. Especially if you have a large delivery stride that is forcing your front foot into excessive plantar flexion and jamming your subtalar joint. I'm sure you've been taping your ankle to limit the "jamming", but if this is proving ineffective then maybe you need to consider your action.
