Ruptured Spleen

My 17 year-old-son ruptured his spleen on Friday nights H.S. football game. He fell on the ball while being tackled. How is it determined safe play for next season since he wants to still play?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Obviously there will be some associated problems medically, but as for return to contact sports in the long term there is no reason that he can't. Many players have ruptured their spleen whilst playing football and returned to the same sport within six months without complications.
