I had open surgical repair of an Achilles tendon rupture 10 days ago. The postop splint was removed 3 days ago. I now am using an immobiliztion boot and crutches.

The main problem I have developed is significant swelling(edema) of my foot(especially heel). The surgeon doesn't have a good explanation for this complication. He advises that I elevate the leg as much as possible but this is not helping so far. Additionally I would like to return to work..most of my job requires sitting but since the leg will be dependent the swelling will likely be a problem. I cannot wear a compression sock (it is too tight). Has anyone else experienced this complication?? Any suggestions??

THANKS

It is still very early after your op to be thinking you should no swelling. I was advised by my consultant and physio that swelling continues in some cases up to 4 months after the op. In my case i'm now 12 weeks post op and i do still have swelling such that I cannot wear the shoes I had prior to the op. It is much improved but i still have to ice and elevate.

In the early stages the more you move it and weight bear the worse the problem is - I tried to do too much in the early weeks after the op and swelling was terrible. I had problems fitting the ankle into the MC Walker boot.... Now swelling is much better but still not back to normal by any means.
