View Full Version : Acromioclavicular distorsion/subluxation.

First of all, hello to everyone, I already posted but there has been a bug and I lost what I typed, so I'll sum up.
About two years ago, while I was boxing, I recieved a highkick in my guard, on my left forearm, as I didn't see it arriving, my shoulder wasn't contracted. The day after, my left shoulder was really painful, but as I thought it wasn't a big injury(and it wasn't, but it needed some strapping and repositionning my clavicle would have help me), I didn't consulted Doctor, and waited for the pain to disappear (It took about 2mouths), that hasn't been a problem as I was doing athletism(sprint) during this period. But, a few mounths later, while I started weight lifting and boxing again, I felt pain in my shoulder while practicing some exercices (push-up, bench...), I consulted a doctor which was pretty bad and only diagnosed a tendinitis(which was only a consequence...), and he told me to do my push-up, with different hand positions... And I continued sport, avoiding painfull exercices.
However, a there is a few weeks, a friend advised me an ostheopath, which immediatly detected that my left clavicle was too high, and put it back on position. But a few days later, while I swimmed, my clavicule started went up again, and pain came back... At this point, I consulted and other doctor which prescribed me some rehabilitation with a specialist (10 times...). But this one didn't even see that my clavicle wasn't in a good position, so I don't expect much from him.
That why I posted here, so you can give me your opinion and maybe some advices. What I wan't to know, is, considering that my clavicle was in a bad position for almost 2years, and that I did sport during this period, there is a chance for me, after seeing back my ostheopath, in order to put my clavicle in the right position, and while doing some rehabilitation myself (reinforcing rotator cuff muscles?), that I can practice boxing, etc, again, or there are big chances that I'll have to be operate?
I think this is grade II, and I can push on my clavicle to lower it, but it immediatly go high when I stop. In addition, I can't lower my left shoulder (this is like it's blocked, don't know why).

i dont think you should be pushing your clavicle down. you should wait for it to heal and harden and stays like that forever.

what language do you speak??

Shoulder injuries are very frustrating. You don't realise how important your shoulders are until you injury them. I have multidirectional instability in both shoulders. My left shoulder was operated on about 4 years ago and haven't had a problem since. I am currently trying to work out what to do with my right shoulder.

I would strongly urge you to go and see a sports physician that can diagnose the condition properly. They can then order the appropriate scans and refer you on to other people if necessary. Whereabouts are you based ? I know some good sports medicine clinics in London, UK, Melbourne and Canberra.

Shoulders are quite complex and would urge you to try conservative treatment first if you're able to. I think it's really important to find a physio that specialises in shoulder problems. My physio in Melbourne specialises in shoulder problems and is fantastic.

As this was the second time I wrote this message, I left lots of mistakes :p

I agree with you, shoulders are really importants:(

Anyway, the problem is that I stayed 2 years like that and the pain never totally desappeared, I think this is because my clavicle wasn't in a good position, I'll try to find a specialist (good... ) so he can explain me how to heal it. I think I'll have to put it back in a good position then work my rotator's cuff muscles...

I'm very busy lately because I'have exams next week, but I'll have more time when it's finished!

I understand, and this isn't a big problem for me, but actually it's much more than discomfort! My left shoulder is highter and there is no way I can lower it! Anyway, I'm going to see an orthopedist tomorrow, I think he'll help me :) (the kinesitherapist who is actually doing my rehabilitation is really bad :( ).

Hi there,

I would encourage you to see a good sports physician if you can. They can refer you onto the appropriate people, ie. a good shoulder physio and perhaps an OS. On Thursday I'll speak to my sports physician to see whether he knows of some good shoulder surgeons in France. He worked at Fulham Football Club in London for a couple of years and know he referred one of his players to an OS in France.

I think that you are very right in that shoulders are very important. I did two dance injuries, first a rotator cuff tear and the second shoulder I did a partial dislocation and it has never been the same since I did both injuries.

I think that the first thing that you should do is go to see a good sports physician who can then order scans or ultrasounds to get your shoulder diagnosed properly. Had I known the extent of my injury I should have done this in the first place rather than go and see my osteo who brushed it off and told me to just rest it and it would get better. It did get better but 6 months after, I hurt my shoulder again, most likely because of the instability of some of the muscles which I sustained from my previous injury.

So I'd suggest go see the sports physician first, get it diagnosed and then they will refer you to seek the appropriate type of treatment. A conservative approach is always a better way to go because going through surgery is very invasive and can be quite painful.

As for the dull pain and discomfort, I don't think that it goes away but there are things which you can do to manage it like keeping the muscles mobile, yoga is very good and even pilates and stretching your muscles so that they don't tense. I also think that with muscle and tendon tears, it's always good to have a good intake of supplements like magnesium. Magnesium is like this great muscle food for not only does your body need quite high doses of it if you are quite fit, it also prevents muscles spasms and will help relax your muscles if one is over compensating.

I just noticed in your post that you mentioned you knew some good sports medicine clinics in Canberra, London, UK and Melbourne. Can you tell me which one you recommend in Canberra? I've been going to see someone at the Sports Med ACT but it would be better if I could find someone who specialises more in shoulder injuries?

Yesterday, I went to an orthopedist, I thought it was not important, as it wasn't very painful, however it was because I stoped sport for 2 weeks, but just doing some push-ups is hurting... when I answered him that I had it for 2 years, he tried to think a bit harder :rolleyes: ... Anyway, I'll do an arthroscanner on friday(19th), so he'll try to understand my problem with the athroscopy, and even if it doenst help him finding a solution, I'll have at least something helping me to understand, myself!

Hello there from Canada. About 25 years ago I broke my AC twice, four months apart requiring a total of four surgerys. The shoulder has been fine and pain free up until last year and recently I had to undergo a fifth surgey (full decompression).I find it funny that your clavicle can move because it shouldn't and it tells me you've either torn your AC or busted a bone. Cronic pain is an indication of a problem so get an MRI. It'll tell the story.

Hello, you're right, even if Doctors don't think that there is any problem, the fact that your clavicle can move is not normal at all, anyway, I'll have the results of arthroscopy next friday, and I'll tell you what's up!!
Chances are that I won't post untill friday, because of my exams!

Hi Angie,

Dr David Hughes who works at Deakin Sports Therapy Centre is really good with shoulders. The number there is (02) 6281 5999. He's done a lot of work with rugby and used to be my sports physician when I lived in the UK.

Hi Guys,

I have just come across this thread and I have a similar problem where I may have broke or fracture my clavicle but being an idiot and not going to have it looked at I waited for the pain to go away now the clavicle is set and in a wrong position. I have spent about 2000 bucks on it already trying about 6 physio's, 3 chiro's, bowen therapist, 3 naturopaths and even went to a specialist who basically told me to live with it now it is set. But my main hobby that I love is bodybuilding and because of the disposition my pectorals are growing non-symmetrically. Can anyone tell me where in Brisbane I can find someone that could possibly help. I am at the point where I am willing to have it broken again if need be. Yes its pissing me off that much.

Thanks for that. I went to see Dr May instead because I couldn't get into see David before Christmas and I wanted to get it sorted before then. She thought I had a SLAP lesion and after spending money on a MRI, it was inconclusive and no sign of a tear. I'm now getting treatment with an awesome physio at the AIS and I'm hoping that I don't need to have to go and get a second opinion. I'm happy with knowing that I can strengthen the muscles around the shoulder joint because really I think this is all you can do, if you don't want to go down the path of surgery.

That's great news !

I'm waiting to see Greg Hoy in mid February. Once I've seen him I can make a decision on my shoulder. It's really giving me the irits at the moment.

I ve just been reading some of your posts. I find it so strange that you would injure your shoulder so severely when doing dancing. I used to do ballrooom and salsa, and I didnt find it very strenous on the shoulders at all. Perhaps you were in competition? Even so, I would imagine its a very rare case.

Well I dance LA style (not ballroom) and Mambo and dance injuries such as subluxations and dislocations are quite common for dancers in our scene. Hip and groin injuries are also common for salsa dancers I guess it also depends on how strong your shoulder muscles are in that they can sometimes reduce the impact of an injury occurring. I think that we also have very different technique to ballroom when we turn. The On2 Mambo style leaves opportunity to for a girl to get injured just basically from how the guy turns you. In general though, salsa dancing is not very strenous on the shoulders but it can be after dancing for long periods of time.

If you think of it this way, if you have been dancing for 5 days straight, ok so workshops all day long and dancing all night, when you get tired you can forget to keep your position or lock your shoulder and that is precisely when I hurt myself both times. The second injury actually happened right towards the end of my holiday in the States after I had been performing and dancing non stop for 3 weeks.
