Everton FC head coach David Moyes has demonstrated just how out of touch senior soccer figures in the UK are with his thoughts on drug testing.

Moyes told the Daily Mirror, 'I find it incredible that it isn't now part of every player's contract that they must - at any time - receive a drug test or a breathalyser test from their club,'

'You can't jump to conclusions, and I am certainly not suggesting anyone is guilty of anything.

'But on the issue of testing, it would help the clubs and help the players - everyone knows the damage that alcohol and drugs can do to your body.'

This crazy idea contravenes all IOC drug testing procedures and would lead to clubs covering up positive finds in a bid to protect their expensive assets - the players.

At injuryupdate, we agree that this sort of quote shows how far the mentality must change in professional soccer. Cricket went through this process earlier in the year with the Shane Warne incident. There were plenty of cricket people who thought that Warne did nothing wrong, but they are now few and far between, because even if he was not cheating from a performance point of view, it deserves a suspension to uphold the integrity of the drug testing process.

For the same reason, at injuryupdate we hope that Ferdinand gets some sort of suspension to give the same message. Probably not the 2 year ban of a confirmed steroid taker, but something a lot more than a slap on the wrist.
