hi,
i had a ASAD operation in october 2006, my progress of recovery was rapid for the first two months and now i am stuck with a constant throbbing and slight pains.
the injury occured playing rugby last March and after various misdiagnosis and incorrectly been turned away from public doctors i decided to pay for a consultation. after paying for scans it was found that i had an instability problem.
i then decided to book in for an ASAD straight away. everythign went fine and i went through a remarkable recovery stage over the first month and after weekly physio sessiosn i had full range of movement after about 4 weeks.
it is now oever three months since that stage and i am stuck with a slight pain when my arm is raised. i have carried out numerous stability exercises and introduced light weights but this only caused severe acheing and pain.
has anybody else had a similar problem and found that it would require further surgery? i am unsure whether to carry on with the stability exercises and expect a gradual improvement or pay for another consultation and possible operation.
thanks

Hi there,
I also suffer from shoulder instability. Not sure what the operation you had entails, but doesn't sound like the op they normally use for shoulder instability.
In mid February I am going to see Greg Hoy in Melbourne for a second opinion on my shoulder. I am due to have shoulder stabilisation surgery in early March, but just want to make sure I'm making the right decision.
I've had the other shoulder done and took a good year for it to come good. So, it still may be ok. Have you got a good shoulder physio ? It's incredibly important as the wrong physio could give you the wrong exercises and not progress like you should. Whereabouts are you based ?
Another idea would be to go and see a good sports physician. They should be able to give you some guidance on your rehab and tell you if it's on track and doing the right physio. I know of some good sports physicians in Melbourne and Canberra. Let me know if you want their details.
Also, have you tried pilates ? I do it twice a week with a physio and have my own individual program. It has really helped strengthen up my shoulder and my other major joints.
Good luck and let us know how you go !!

thanks for the reply!
firsty i missed out a important point lol, im from UK, but am finding it hard to find good info or sports people who have had the same injury and gone through successful rehab.
i had minor spilts to anterior and posterior labrum, with slight instability signs.
after 3 weeks i had full ROM in my arm. the constant throbbing had pretty much gone but is returning now. i carried out a programme of stability exercises and it seemed to work wonders. put i am at the point now where i am unsure of the next steps
how do i know when i can carry out strength exercises?
the physio said it is fine apart from overhead movement but i am not 100% convinced.
i have a struggle to push away, where as pulling towards me is fine.
thanks for helping, i hope this answers some of your Qs.

Hi there,
I used to live in London and went to a clinic called Pure Sports Medicine which is fantastic. They have links to some great physios and surgeons. Their phone number is 0870 2000 878 and website is www.puresportsmed.com
Would highly recommend you go and see one of their sports physicians there. They can then put you in the right direction.
Good luck and let us know how you go !!

I agree with KJ you should go and see a good sports physician who should be able to help with your questions. Your physio should also be able to guide you with the type of strengthening exercises.
Just be careful with going back into going strength work too quickly. I think I went back too quickly without knowing what was going on with my shoulder and I did the stupid thing of going back to do some weights because I thought I had hurt my rotator cuff muscles which is not the case as I have recently found out.
Take care..
