Matt,

A friend of mine used to race speedway. He retired, perfectly healthy, but then decided to go back for one last race. In that race he was catapaulted head first into a crash barrier in a high speed crash and broke his neck at C5/6 (not to mention numerous other body parts). He is now a complete quadriplegic.

You've been given a warning. Listen to your doc and watch from the sidelines (or find another interest if that is too difficult). It is not worth the risk.

Cheers,

JB

To be honest, I think that it's time to take a break from things before something worse could happen. It's not worth the risk.

Listen to your doctor and protect your neck. I have worked with too many people who are paraplegics and quadraplegics who didn't listen to their doctor's advice.

Hi Mat

At the end of the day, medicos or others can only give you advice, you have to make your choices about your life. Just make sure, in making those choices, you FULLY understand your injury (e.g. it is the damage to the spinal cord/nerves – which you seem to have - that causes paralysis not the fracture itself - it’s just that when you fracture a vertebrae there’s a good chance that any displacement of the fracture will cause damage to the spinal cord/nerves, including paralysis, as well) and the consequences of further injury (i.e. quadriplegia or even death). A visit to a spinal unit might give you some idea of this. Be aware that @#%* does happen and not just to other people, it can happen to you. (It’s darn hard give up something you love doing – I’ve had to do it twice – but it would be a darn sight harder to live with quadriplegia. The good news is that, while you might not see it now, there are a whole bunch of other great things out there apart from playing football).

Cheers,

JB
