Hi All,
I'm sure this topic has been done to death, but I can't find a topic with the exact same symptoms. Maybe someone can help me out.
A little backgroud. I had Perthes disease as a child in my left hip and also a ACL reconstruction in my right knee.
I was dead lifting (similar to lifting a heavy box from the ground) using my legs to lift and a straight back. I felt a sudden pain in my right lower back. I stopped an went home.
8 months on and I still have the same symptoms which are:
Stiffness and pain in my lower back when leaning forward or after sitting or walking for a period of time
Pain around my hip (just below my hip bone) and down my leg to my lower quad (right side)
Pain sometimes along my groin (right side)
Lower Back spasms
Very tense muscles in my lower back
The main source of the pain is just above my right glute.
I know this sounds like Sciatica (but these are the symptoms, I want to know the cause). What is causing the pressure of the sciatic nerve or is it something else causing the pain and problems? Discs, muscles, ligaments, SIJD?
I've seen a Chiropractor who has helped relieve some pain and tenseness, but hasn't given me a diagnosis. Nor has a doctor. I had X-rays taken yesterday and get the results next week - I don't believe they will show much and will hold out for an MRI.
I'm only 25 years old. Any opinions would be much appreciated.

I have suffered from lower back pain for quite awhile due to having quite a curved back and I finally decided to do something about it 2 years ago. I ended up going to see an osteopath and also started yoga which helped with understanding how to release the tension in my lower back. Remedial massage has also been very helpful.
I'd suggest that you either go and see an osteo or physio and that it may be wise to steer clear of a chiropractor as over manipulation of the spine can do bad things to your musculoskeletal structure.

I have an appointment with "specialist", although not sure what in, on Tuesday to talk about my x-ray results. Might find out more then.
I've had bad experiences with Physios in the past, although I'm very seriously thinking about giving them another chance and knocking the Chiro on the head. 8 months - and I don't feel that much better = money wasted :-S
I stretch daily and have been doing stregthening exercises based on pilates. I've no real choice at the moment other than to put my faith back in the NHS :-/

g'day
your condition sounds very similar to mine. i have the same symptoms, pain down the side of right thigh, particularly when bending forward, radiates into just above glut, and into groin on occasion. tight clothes make it worse but i have no strength deficiencies in quads, hammy's or gluts
the pain down the lateral side of right thigh is meralgia paresthetica, at least mine is, an entrapement of the lateral cutaneuous nerve. but what is the cause as that is only a symptom. well, my right hip sits just higher than my left in some way, i believe it is something to do with my abdominal muscles or deep inner back muscles. some twisting movements giving me relief partially - eg oblique twists
if you think you are similar please email me christopher_millet@rta.nsw.gov.au as i'd be keen to discuss it with you as i am struggling to solve it although i have learnt a lot

Why have you not had an MRI yet? Any signs of neurological symptoms and you should have been next in line at the local radiology/hospital. Most specialists will not look at you unless you have an MRI. In my professional opinion, I would get a referral for an MRI, get yourself to either a good chiro/physio/specialist for interpretation of the results.
Doesn't sound like you have sciatica as the pain pattern is not for the sciatic nerve (passing straight down the back of the leg, not coming around the hip or into the quad). I have seen chiro's and physio's and osteo's diagnose this as sciatica. There are equally as many bad physio's as for bad chiro's juts like in any profession. You just need to find a good one.

Hi,
I am also very new to this, but seem to have similar symptons....
I hurt my back at work over a year ago, and have been having bandaid treatements for all this time....
I have had one CT scan which has shown that at L5/S1 there is a mild broard based posterior bulge. There is also a swollen right exhisting L5 nerve root, and have been diagnosed with a history of right sided sciatica......note this scan was taken way back in july 2007........
I have had next to no time off work, until recently, when I have agrivated it over several months, because my supervisors belive they know more than the doctors and do not let me stick to the back to work plans.,......
Last week I slipped on a grape crossing the store, I did not fall to the ground, but jarred my already tender back, and was given the week off to rest, much to my bosses disgust.
Now I have pains going all the way down both legs, sharp pains in my hip and groin area that is particularly painfull when I try and walk, and a pain in the side of my foot that is constant, as well as pins and needles in both feet......
My physio wants me to have another CT scan, but I have been told only specialists are able to order MRI's which would be usefull to finnally figure out exactly where the problem is.....
