Dr John Orchard spoke at the Sports Physiotherapy Australia (NSW chapter) annual conference on November 9th. Any feedback on this presentation or ideas?

my physiotherapist told me about this site. I am not in the medical profession but am a masters athlete (sprints and multis, 50 yrs) with an injury of the semimembranosus that has hung around for 7 weeks and was aggravated during the Masters Games in ACT last week.
I would like to be ready for the state relays 29/11 but that seems a forlorn hope. I certainly intend to compete in the multi event championships 3/4 January.
I was told of a course of non-steroidal injections which may help me to get on top of things. Is there anyone who'd like to help me out here?
thanks, Steve Crocker

This is a tough situation to be in. My belief is that if you have a hamstring injury you really need at least 6-8 weeks from the last aggravation in order to fully heal to be able to run at 100%. Football players can often play at 2-3 weeks by subconsciously running at perhaps 95% pace but competitive sprinters need to run at full pace. I suppose it does depend whether you are competing for fun or to win.
The one left field suggestion I could make is that you may possibly at your age have some nerve impingement in the lumbar spine which is causing hamstring pain and/or dysfunction. If you were to use anti-inflammatory medication, it may be best to get a radiologist to inject it under CT control to the L5 nerve root on the side of your hamstring injury. This may give a quick relief from hamstring pain if it is nerve related, but it is hard to say over the internet whether this would be a factor in your case. Definitely your age makes it a possibility. Articles you may be interested in are:
