:) Hi, i'm new to this kind of thing, Forums. I have had a L5/S1 disc protrusion since 1985.
Recently it has gotten worse and the protrusion is stuck on my left side nerves. My specialist before didn't want to do any type of surgery, especially fusion at a young age; but now since I have moved and I am seeing a neuro specialist, she said that surgery is the way to go. I am having it done hopefully at the end of march, and half my pain will be gone and I won't need to use a walking stick. The other problem with my back is the facet joints, which stop me from walking sometimes. I have had the nerve block injection, which lasted a month with no pain, which was great no pain no medication to take. I am recently taking strong medication which is not very good as it either makes me sleepy or keeps me up at night. The reason I am posting this is because I would love to hear from anyone who has had the operation before, would like to know how it went after it. Was it a success or failure? Anyway, anyone with any information is very grateful and helpful to me.

Hi, i think i am in a place to answer your questions.

I have had my operation 6 weeks ago.

In short i had reptured disc L4/L5 & L5/S1 and had been copping with massive pain for 6 month prior to my operation.

Before the operation i was taking in the vacinity of 6-8 panadiene forte a day, which was didnt seem to be doing much, and prexige (anti inflamatory).

Post op, obvisously quite immobile for the first 2 days and a bit stiff, but the pain was gone. 6 weeks on i am able to walk up to the shops and function normally without any pain. I am not picking up anything heavy as yet.

I am getting a little bit of very minor pain in my left calf, but this is due to some residual swelling. Which occassionally flares up a little when i have been a bit too active. But its a 1000 times more managable then the pain pre op.

Being 27 years old it was quite a big call to under go this operation as i have always been active in running and other competitive sports, but the results speak for themselves. I won't be able to do any high impact activities or contact sport in the future, but i am ok with that.

I was operated on by Dr Michael Biggs and cant thank him enough.

Let me know if you have any more questions

Can someone let me know if they know any personal trainers in Sydney who specialise in training people which lower back conditions.
