Kevin Beard has been the head trainer at the Melbourne Football Club for 14 years where he began his relationship officially with the Club in the 1970’s. Kevin or 'Kevy' as he is referred to around the Club is 66 years old, married to Dela, has three sons, and loves his role as a trainer.

Kevin manages a team of 15 trainers. The focus of his role is to help the players with their preparation for training, matches, and recovery sessions. He works in conjunction with Club doctors, physios, masseurs, players, and the football hierarchy.

"I love what I do, and enjoy the wins and the losses with everyone,” said Kevin.

"It's great to help the young players who have just started their careers and the older guys who have been around for a while. I take great pleasure in seeing the young fellas turn up to their first training run, play their first game, and develop into top athletes.

"I'm semi-retired so the training sessions during the day suit me. I attend training four sessions a week as well as match days and recovery. It's a long-term commitment – you can’t take off during the football season.

"I'm exceptionally grateful that Melbourne has given me this opportunity and I enjoy every bit of it. I'd recommend it to anyone that has some time up their sleeve. It's also great to be a part of the Club and have the opportunity to travel interstate with the team."

Kevin has always had an association with football and was formally the President of the AFL Trainers Association, a trainer for the Victorian State Football team and in 1996 awarded the National Sports Trainer of the Year.

Kevin's brother Terry is also a trainer at the Club and has been for 29 years. Both Kevin and Terry are Melbourne Football Club Life Members.

AFL players train during standard business hours. Being a trainer is a big commitment as the role requires you at training sessions three or four times a week from February until September. They are also required during the pre-season.

Melbourne is always looking for new trainers to join the team. So if you have some free time during normal working hours, are semi-retired, a shift worker, a physio, or a human movement student send your resume to melbfc@demons.com.au for attention to Chris Fagan.

A level 1 Sports Trainers certificate is preferable.
