6 weeks ago I twisted my knee while bowling in a game of cricket, the initial x-ray 1 week after accident notes the following:
*A large effusion in the suprapatellar bursa.
*A small avulsed bone fragment at the postero-inferior corner of the patella.
*widening of the patello-femoral joint.

Recent x-rays, taken today, note the following:
*Knee joint efusion present
*small fracture fragment at the medial margin of the patella
*possible osteochondral fragment at the apex of the patellofemoral joint.

All my doctor has really said to me is given time and rest things will heal. It has been 6 weeks and my knee is still swolen and there is no way I could even consider running.

Can anyone provide any further information on the above injury and a time frame as to when I could even consider playing cricket again.

Sounds like you may have dislocated your kneecap playing cricket. Unless you got hit by a ball or landed badly directly on it, the patella normally won't fracture unless it has clicked in and out of its groove (i.e. a mini dislocation).

Sometimes you can have loose fragments floating in the knee, and if the swelling doesn't go down, you might need more than an X-ray to pick these up. An MRI scan might be called for soon to assist with the diagnosis, or you could see a sports physician or knee surgeon. An MRI scan costs about $300 cash, but less if a surgeon refers you.
