I was hit in the side playing football two weeks ago. The pain was not noticeable until 2 days later when i awoke and noticed it was quite sore from being layed on. I managed to get through the week but suffered another knock at training. The pain was obvious straight away but subsided to being tolerable within 2 minutes. I can run, laugh, and cough with minimal discomfort but the pain is quite evident when touching around the bottom of my left side ribcage or if i attempt to lay fully on my side. Can anyone offer suggestions as i have broken a rib before and the pain is not like that:confused:

Hi there,

I'd be very careful with this kind of injury. Your rib cage is there to protect your internal organs. You could have bruised something. Given that it is your rib cage, I would strongly suggest that you go to your GP and get it checked out. I always go with the theory that if something is bothering you, you are better getting it checked out. Don't do what I did, I waited for like 6 months to go and get treatment for my shoulder after I injured it thinking it would be fine and my shoulder is still sore at times and it is almost a year after I hurt it. You could also try putting some heat on it since it is an old injury and see how it feels. If you feel worse stop the heat straight away.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your considerations and i hope you dont go to long with pain in your shoulder. I live over an hour away from a gp and am still hoping someone/s can help with some further suggestions as i have stated earlier i have broken ribs before and the pain of this injury is more annoying then hurtful.Once again Angielu, thanks for your help. Please keep the suggestions coming.

Hey there,

I would see how it goes and just be careful with it. you could of sustained some bruising so it will take some time to heal. I can't think of much more of what I can suggest that you try. If you are overly concerned there are health advice hotlines which have trained registered nurses who can might be able to give you some suggestions. The one we have in the ACT is very good and it is called health first. Where abouts are you based and I will send you the details. I believe that WA and VIC also have one similar to health first in the ACT.

Let me know.

Thanks darl, I live in Qld outside of Brisbane about 140km. The rib is feeling fine during the day,but after spending a night tossing and turning it is quite annoying in the morning to not have full range of movement. During the day i only feel it when putting weight like scaling a soil stockpile or after getting a knock to the area. I appreciate your help

This is the number for the queensland health equivalent of health first in the ACT. Their number is 13 43 25 84 (13 HEALTH). Give them a call and see what they can tell you.

You can also consider the possibility of a muscular tear of the abdominal muscles that attach at the lower angle end of the ribs, or you can also consider the possibility that it may be referred pain from the back as well.

Just because it is a different pain to the last time you had a fractured rib, I wouldn't rule it out completely either. It could just be fractured differently.

Good luck with your recovery.

Thank you for your concern and advice. I am still playing with this injury as im sure it is a muscular concern as i am using anti inflammotory gel to rub into the area and during tueday to friday i have no action pain except a little discomfort from sleeping upon it. The gel is helping keep the problem down for the time and i will have a three week break from footy now as there is a rep game next weeknd and then my team has a bye the weekend after so im hoping that i give it enough time to settle down on its own
