ENGLAND captain Jonny Wilkinson is set to make his long-awaited return from injury in his Newcastle club's European Cup tie with Edinburgh on Saturday.

Wilkinson, who has not played since injuring his bicep in a league match in mid-October, took part in full-contact training with Newcastle Falcons today.

"He came through training, and if there's no reaction there's every chance he could feature," said Newcastle director of rugby Rob Andrew.

Wilkinson's injury kept him out of England's three (northern) autumn internationals, when he was replaced by Charlie Hodgson and the captaincy went to full-back Jason Robinson.

The 25-year-old has not played for his country since the 2003 World Cup final – where his drop goal in the dying seconds of having spent the first half of this year recovering from surgery for a long-standing neck and shoulder problem.

i thaught that jonny wilkinson had trapped a nerve at the base of his neck therefore losing most of the use of his arm, hence the muscle wastage, i believe the trapped nerve was caused by a bit of bone pushing on the nerve caused bt hard tackling!!?? he said himself on Parkinson. he has had an opperation or two to correct it hasnt he??

Completely correct!

He decided to have surgery in Febuary........

'I seem to have had this problem for a long, long time. The original stress fracture, which is the cause of all this, could have been there for two years or longer — I’ve taken so many hits on my neck, it could have been from that far back. But the constant hits that I’ve taken have led to it getting increasingly worse and now it’s starting to cause this weakening. At last now, though, I can see a way where everyone is confident that I’m having it sorted out for good.

Since then his strength has been slow to progress and he was still experiencing pain at training with the contact work. All is well now.

Except! He has just hurt his knee in Newcastle's European Cup defeat to Perpignan in a crunching tackle. Awaiting scan results.
