Celebrex protects against gastrointestinal bleeding compared to other, equally potent, NSAIDs but has the risk of increased cardiovascular complications in high doses.

Should it stay on the market as an alternative to regular NSAIDs for those who can't take them, or should it be withdrawn, like Vioxx?

Pfizer is one of the most profitable and the biggest drug company in the world. If they keep Celebrex on the market, then they will face massive massive lawsuits from anyone who has a heart attack if subsequent research shows that regular doses lead to an increased risk. The plaintiff lawyers will be circling.

I predict in 5-10 years Cox-2 NSAIDS will be non existant and NSAIDs will be virtually redundant as a class of drug for the management of sports injuries, pertaining to an absolute lack of evidence. The question will be which drug will fill the void in profit for pharmacological companies or whether a new class of drug will evolve. Will regulation bodies learn from the mistakes assoicated with the cox-2 NSAIDs??

Interesting thoughts, but I reckon NSAIDs are around for good. Much as those of us who have seen the light about inflammation discourage them, injured people seem to love to take them. If doctors won't prescribe then people drive out of their way to get Nurofen rather than Panadol. There must be something in it that we don't understand as to why the punters love them so much!
