Had an acl reconstruction june '03... however as a result a cyclops lesion developed which i had removed october '04... recovery was goin ok until i resumed running 4-5 weeks later upon which my knee blew up again... the doc said it was most probably just an adhesion that formed and caused the bleeding (removed the blood)... he told me to hold off running until start of this year... which i resumed no dramas.. leg strength is fine... however it still tends to swell up (not as bad as before and tends to settle overnight) when i stay on my feet a lot.. eg lots of walking, at work or just standing on my feet all day. But it comes up better after i do weights or do some running which is quite odd.... just wondering if anyone knows why my knee puffs up as a result of these less strenuous activities...

Main problem caused by cyclops lesion is inability to straighten the knee out to full extension.

Unfortunately, knee swelling is more likely to be caused by lining cartilage damage, or possibly, infection after surgery.

If your surgeon told you there was a lot of lining cartilage damage then the swelling may persist. If the rest of the knee was good, the range is now good, but you are getting swelling, return for another check to rule out things like a knee infection.

Well the only cartlidge damage i had was sutured when i had the reco... so i dont think that could pose any problems... the doc woulda seen anyways when i had the recent scope... but when i extend my knee (like you would on the leg extension machine) there is still a hint of grinding i can feel in there... not as bad as it was before i had the lesion removed... but theres still a little bit there... plus my doc says my knee is excellent and shouldnt be having any problems... my next appointing is mid-feb... guess i have to tough it out until then...

If you had a meniscus sutured at the time of reconstruction, there is unfortunately a high rate of these re-tearing.

In theory, getting menisci sutured is a lot better than cut out, as you still keep the cushioning effect, but unfortunately there is a high rate of re-tear after suture as the meniscus has very poor blood supply.

but wouldnt the doctor have noticed any tear in the meniscus when i had the arthroscope?

Ok its now over 5 months since i had a cyclops lesion removal... back to playing soccer for the past 5-6 weeks... still not really any improvements regarding the swelling i get in comparison to what it was like 2 months ago... when i rest it settles... but say i play soccer on back to back days... and throw in work wed-fri (as a driver delivering alcohol... so involves lifting) it still swells. But say i rest for 2 days its almost normal again. the knee joint feels pretty free... in comparison to before i had the cyclops removed. could the suture have re-torn which i had done with my reco? i dont have any pain but the swelling is persisting when i am quite active. the doc said to get in contact with him if the swelling persisted. So i'll prolly do that but would like to know any possibilities of what the problem might be.

Hard to differentiate between a meniscal re-tear and a bit of lining cartilage wear which is causing your knee to swell up (without going back in for another scope - even the MRI findings would be difficult to interpret).

If you can live with it you probably would, if the swelling gets worse and you start getting catching another op may be needed.

Agree that the surgeon should have been able to give the meniscus the complete all clear at the last operation and there should be a photo or video which can be shown to you (of the meniscus) from the op.

well its now been a year since my arthroscope to remove the cyclops lesion resultant from my acl reco (june 03) completed a full soccer season no dramas with the knee except for the fluid i continue to get after activity... whether it be walking around, running, playing sport whatever. surgeon said unless its sufficient enough to hinder movement of the knee then nothing can really be done and i just have to live with it.

Curious to know how other peoples knee respond to physical activity after their reconstructions. Coz its just annoying as it plays on my mind and i cant play sport on successive days.

P.S. it was never like this before i had the scope last year, however the doc said the knee looked perfectly fine when i had the scope.

Hey, I was just wondering... I had my ACL replaces in Jan 07 and I found out in July that I have a cyclops lesion. I'm having my next surgery to remove the lesion in early Dec. How long is recovers for this surgery, how long are you on crutches and do you need physio for this one too? Just wondering. Thanks Guys!
