A question for some of the sports clinicians.

In your experiences, how often have you see examples of symptomatic heterotopic bone formation following a contusion/ haematoma, in the quads for example. I've recently come across a couple for first time, with both occuring in a relatively short period. And, how many asymptomatic cases do you think are walking around with no-one the wiser?

Any insights, experiences etc... would be appreciated.

There would be some (a small amount) that occur without ever being diagnosed, although on routine hip X-ray, for example, it is rare to see myositis ossificans around the femur that hasn't been diagnosed.

Cheers, thought as much. Love the site.

what are the currents thoughts on when to return to sport following myositis ossificans? If someone is relatively pain free within 4-6 weeks if you do too much will you risk increasing osteoblast activity?

I would say when running pain free and range is decent for knee flexion.
