Hi Came a cropper off a bike in Germany on the 31st of May and smashed my humerus just above my elbow. I spent about Three weeks in hospital in Berlin before I was able to fly home to Melbourne. The Surgeons over there have filled my arm with metal (26 screws and 2 plates). They told me that they would have to come out in about 18months.
When I got back home I was referred to Dr Minoo Patel. I had my first consultation a month ago. I initial thoughts is that he was very good . He contradicted what the German doctors had said by saying that the metal would stay in for life.
I went back and saw him last weeks for a check up. After waiting hour as he was running late (he had 3 other patients booked in the same time slot, incase someone cancelled) I finally got in to see him. I explained that I was getting severe pain on the inside of my elbow when I was bending it, he dismissed this as normal. I also made mention that while I was swimming I could hear metal grinding with every stroke. He again said this was common and tried to send me on my way (all this was after 4minutes). It wasn’t until that I said I wasn’t happy with his dismissal of the pain in the inside of my elbow that he had a good look. After feeling around he said my ulnar nerve was in the wrong spot and that I will need an operation within a month to put it under some muscle otherwise I would get “claw hands” within a year. So he went to everything is fine to you need am operation ASAP.
It’s because of this that I’m getting a second opinion. I’m booked into see Dr John Salmon in a month. Has anyone used him for a humerus or elbow operation. I would love to hear from anyone who has. Also from anyone who has used Dr Minoo Patel.
Are there any other elbow and arm specialists that anyone can recommend?
Regards
Matt
