'Crook as a dog' Hayden is doubtful

Struggling batsman Matthew Hayden is in doubt for Australia's one-day tour of New Zealand with a debilitating chest infection, only days after receiving words of reassurance from the national selectors about his position in the one-day team.

Australian team doctor Trefor James said reports on Radio 3AW yesterday by Hayden's friend and former Australian batsman Dean Jones, who said the 33-year-old was suffering from "full-blown pneumonia" and was in grave doubt for the one-dayers, were "a bit of an exaggeration".

However, James conceded there was some doubt about whether the big Queenslander would be well enough to fly to Auckland with the team on Wednesday.

"He's got a viral chest infection and he wasn't well enough to play [for Queensland in the ING Cup match against Western Australia on Friday]," James said.

"These things are not totally predictable. Our expectation is that he'll be fit to go, but sometimes these things can take more like a week to clear up so that's where there's a bit of doubt."

James said the illness was separate from the still undiagnosed ailment that was sapping Hayden's energy after he returned from India in November.

Queensland team doctor Simon Carter has told Hayden to rest completely for the next few days. His health will be reviewed on Tuesday in consultation with James.

"It's really how he is by Tuesday that will determine whether he goes or not, but we are 90 per cent sure that he'll still go," James said.

Jones, who has been working with Hayden on his batting during his slump, was less optimistic.

"He's as crook as a dog at the moment," he said.

Hayden's well-documented struggles in recent months have included relatively lean Test series against India, New Zealand and Pakistan. He was dropped for the one-day finals series after 23-year-old Michael Clarke excelled as an opener during a two-game rest Hayden was given under the now controversial rotation policy.

Selection chairman Trevor Hohns indicated last week that Hayden was likely to be given an opportunity to find his form again at the top of the order in New Zealand.

Then he was forced out of the Queensland match.

The big issue is whether Michael Clarke will get in an stop Hayden ever getting back in the team.

The NZ games are pretty much a boring prospect otherwise.

There needs to be a coordinated one day world annual table. Every top 8 team should have 2-4 matches against the other 7 sides, with semi and Grand final series at the end of the year.

I like Greg Chappell's idea of 40 over ODIs with 2 x 20 over sections and alternate batting. That is, Team A has 20 overs, then Team B has 20 overs, then team A plays overs 21-40 then team B does the same.
