Hayden in doubt for opening Test

A back-in-form Matthew Hayden is in danger of missing the start of the trans-Tasman Test series after sustaining a painful shoulder injury in the limited-overs thumping of New Zealand.

Hayden suffered a grade one strain to the AC joint landing heavily on the point of his right shoulder in taking a spectacular outfield catch as the Black Caps (208) fell 106 runs short at Jade Stadium.

The injury could sideline him for up to three weeks which would scrub him from the rest of the five-match one-day series and cost him a berth in the first Test back in Christchurch, starting March 10.

Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouri hoped Hayden could still be available for Saturday's third one-dayer in Auckland and said a better prognosis would be known on Thursday.

"There are extremes, it can take three weeks and it can take three days. We'll know in two days time," Kountouri said.

"At the moment he couldn't bat now and I doubt he could bat tomorrow. But we have an extra break ... so hopefully he'll get over it.

"They're pretty painful and it's hard to lift his arm at the moment. It's very swollen."

Hayden injured the shoulder in a diving catch on the square leg boundary to dismiss the dangerous Chris Cairns (22 off 16 balls) for the Black Caps to plummet to 6-73 in the 17th over chasing 315 for victory.

Any time out of the game would be a terribly unlucky blow for the big Queenslander who put a much-publicised form slump well and truly behind him with a commanding 114 off 124 balls.

His fifth ODI century, and first in 13 months, featured 12 fours and two sixes and propelled the world champions to 6-314 after he lost opening partner Adam Gilchrist second ball of the day.

Hayden and Ricky Ponting (53 off 57) then got on the front foot with a 99-run stand before Damien Martyn made a crisp 58 in a 132-run partnership.

"The knock today was outstanding," said Ponting. "You see Matty driving the ball up through the off-side and pulling the way he did today means he's getting close to being back in really good touch.

"We all saw signs of that in the first game (scoring 71) on a difficult wicket so we'll keep our fingers crossed now and hope his shoulder's not to bad and he'll be right for the next game."

Ponting congratulated New Zealand Cricket for its increased security awareness after there was no repeats of the ugly crowd scenes that marred the series opener in Wellington.

But the clash wasn't devoid of controversy as umpire Billy Bowden infuriated the world champions by docking Mike Hussey one run for striding on the pitch in the penultimate over.

An off-balance Hussey, who had been warned for the offence earlier in his impressive 32 not out off 20 balls, ran only a couple of strides down the middle of the pitch before veering off the wicket.

Bowden revoked the single and sent Hussey back to face the next ball to the left-hander's disbelief and the ire of the tourists in the dressing room.

The game was effectively over when the Black Caps' top-order failed to handle Australia's potent new-ball attack, nicking Gilchrist five straight catches by the 17th over.

Only a freewheeling Daniel Vettori, notching the highest ever ODI score by a No.8 batsman (83 off 77), added some respectability to NZ's reply which ended at 208.

Vettori shared in two 62-run stands with Brendon McCullum (20) and former All Black Jeff Wilson (22).

All-rounder Wilson, in his first ODI in 12 years, had a forgettable return to international cricket with the ball.

The 60-Test rugby winger was forced out of the attack on conceding 19 runs from his first two overs but returned for four more overs to finish with the unflattering figures of 0-57.

Apparently no bone damage, and he's going to play in the 3rd one dayer. What huge unit!

Matthew Hayden will play in the first Test against New Zealand on Thursday after recovering from a shoulder injury suffered two weeks ago at Christchurch. Hayden was passed fit after completing four net sessions over the past two days and will open with Justin Langer at the same ground in the match starting on Thursday.

"He's pulled up well without too much discomfort, and is now set to play," Alex Kontouri, the team physiotherapist, said. Hayden strained the AC joint taking a diving catch from Chris Cairns on February 22 and the slow-healing injury forced Australia to keep Mike Hussey on the tour once the one-day matches finished.

Hussey will return to Brisbane to play in Western Australia's vital Pura Cup match against Brisbane at the Gabba on Thursday. Brad Hogg, who was part of Australia's 5-0 series victory, has also been selected in the Warriors squad. Hayden's recovery clears up one place in the order, but there is still doubt over the make-up of the bowling attack with Jason Gillespie, Brett Lee and Michael Kasprowicz battling for the two spots alongside Glenn McGrath.
